"We don't have enough space for all of you James." The pilot says.

"The children must go first." He replied lifting the children onto the helicopter.

Looking out the window James was suddenly overcome with exhaustion. Not because of a busy day at work, but because of a busy twelve months in Yemen.

The mission was unsuccessful, the one thing they had to save are now nothing but a pile of ashes. But looking at his brothers and sister around him in the medium sized plane he remembered that not everyone came out unscathed.

Simon across from him was hunched forward with his head in his hands with tears rolling down his cheeks. His once brunette hair is now matted with dirt, blood and ash.

George was facing forward staring at nothing. He was too far gone to be brought back. He has a scar from his left ear to the corner of his mouth.

Chrissie was staring back at him with tears in her eyes. She is strong. But the what we just experienced broke even her. Her blue eyes are now dull and her blond hair is in a messy ponytail.

Me? All I could think was. We should have gone first. Maybe then-

"James? Time to go home," Chrissie says in her 'South African' accent. I once asked her if she was British. I ended up with a dislocated shoulder and a lecture on South Africa being colonized by Britain or something like that I didn't listen.

Sighing I get up and pick up my only bag and head out. We all nodded at each other putting on our sunglasses before opening the plane door.

"Mr Savage what do you have to say to death of fifty children you and your team were supposed to save?" One reporter asks.

"Mr Savage what about the parents loss of a child?" Another reporter asks.

"Mr Savage would you die in their place?" Another asks. She was pressed up to me but at this point I don't care.

I stop, "yes," I tell her before heading to my car. Shutting the door behind me I stop. Taking off my sunglasses I rub my eyes free of the tears threatening to spill.

Taking in a deep breath and releasing it in a big gust I head to the restaurant where my family was having lunch.

-----

Slipping unseen to where my family was eating I see the seat next to one of three sisters by my father was open.

In total my parents. My three sisters Cassidy, Anita, Josephine and my two younger brothers Tyler and Brett were sitting at the restaurant.

"Who did you say was coming Marge?" My father asks mom. She opens her mouth. "I was coming but I can leave if you don't want me here?" I say making a move to leave.

They were all frozen except my mom. We organized this.

"Dimple Face!" Cassidy screams. I force out a laugh at the nickname. She jumps up and hugs me followed by the rest of the family and a man hug from my brothers. We then hear the applauding of the surrounding people when we break the hug and sit down getting ready to eat.

---

"Are you sure you don't want to have dessert with us?" Mom asks for the thousandth time.

"Mom I'm sure. Hey Anita is-"

"If you are going to ask if Phoenix is at the house then the answer is yes she is." She interrups me. I nod and she grins cheekily.

Standing and saying goodbye till Sunday lunch I climb in the car to my home. My sanctuary is right by the forest with the best security.

And his German Shepherd, Phoenix is waiting at home for him. James does admit that he did miss his Phoenix out on the field but he valued her life too much to risk it.

She is my companion in this hard life. And hopefully she won't be my only companion.

Hi everyone I hope you enjoyed my first chapter. Some of these names will not change but enjoy my first book.
