Song of the Chapter: Good Luck, Super Whatevr
The doors to the hospital burst open as Brendon ran in with Sarah's hand clasped tightly into his palm. The frantic man ran to the front desk, panting while saying "My daughter and her friend just came in in an ambulance, gun shot wounds." The nurse moved her eyes from him to the computer screen, typing quickly and almost effortlessly. "Yes, right here. They came in with a Dallon Weekes, Andy Hurley, and Joe Trohman. Eva Urie and Alex Centil?" Brendon nodded as he hugged Sarah deeper into his side. He didn't want to lose anymore of his family.
"Right this way," the nurse said, getting up and leading the distressed couple down a seemingly endless hallway. Soon enough, they got to a room that echoed with monotoned beeps and hissing air from various machines their daughter and practically son were hooked up to. The hospital let the two share a room, considering Eva went from screaming for Dallon to screaming for Alex throughout the entire ambulance ride. Alex was still passed out but Eva was curled up on the bed hiding her face and avoiding anyone in the room. "E?" Brendon whispered. The girl's eyes lifted and met with his before his arms were around her tiny frame and millions of IV's and wires. When Brendon looked back at Eva, she was sobbing again and desperately holding onto his shoulders. "I'm not going anywhere, okay? It'll be okay." She nodded then looked to Sarah who stood watching in the doorway. Eva reached out to her mom and the two embraced with almost as much force and her and Brendon. "You're here, you're alive, you're safe," she whispered into Eva's hair repeatedly, not letting her forget it. But, Eva didn't want to be alive. She felt guilt for not helping Alex, not getting him out of that house and his parent's locked up, not protecting him from the bullet, and not even getting him to calm down before everything happened. Eva didn't dare say this out loud though.
Brendon had moved to Alex's bed where he laid sprawled out. His hand ran through Alex's hair as thought consumed the musician. How could someone be so evil towards their own family? How could someone just leave behind their kid and want them dead like that? The injured boy started to stir and erupted from the sheets, looking around and being completely confused. "Shh, Alex it's okay. We're here." Alex took a deep breath and nodded before laying back down. "Thank you, for getting me here and always letting me stay with you. Just, thank you." Brendon smiled and hugged him tightly, not wanting to lose him either. Sarah joined the two, leaving Brendon to walk out of the room and almost run into Dallon, Andy, and Joe.
"Thank you guys, for getting them here." He hugged each of them individually, pulling Dallon even closer and whispering "Thank you for staying with her." The bassist smiled and nodded as the two released. The four walked to the waiting room, finding a still sobbing Theo on the ground next to the chairs, holding a tired Jane in his lap. Sam was laying across the chairs and Spencer had just walked in, trying to figure out what happened from the band members sitting around the pretty empty room. When Theo saw us, he gently moved Jane and stood up to meet us. "Are they okay?"
"I haven't talked to the doctors yet, but they're both up and seem to be okay. Everything will be fine, Theo." The boy nodded then walked away, moving to the window and staring outside in his own corner of the world. Brendon watched him carefully then lifted Jane up to lay her across a different row of chairs. From there, he met up with Spencer, explaining what happened. "You guys should go home. It's late." She nodded then looked at her friends littered around the room. "Okay, my parents are outside. I'll take Jane and Sam, but I don't think that Theo is leaving." We both turned back to see him staring out into space and completely lost. Brendon nodded then thanked her, hugging her before collecting Sam and asking Dallon to get Jane. Once the three were gone, he talked to the rest of the band members. Pete and Patrick were now off in a separate part of the waiting room with Pete still shaking. Brendon had already figured he'd have a panic attack after everything, but based on how much he was still shaking, he knew it was bad. Patrick looked from his band mate to Brendon and shook his head slightly. "I haven't seen the doctors yet. Sarah is probably with them right now. Did they get Alex's dad?" Both men nodded before Patrick added "We told them about the abuse from his mom and they went to his house to arrest her as well. The trial is sometime soon." Brendon silently cursed those evil assholes that caused so much pain and destruction in one night. "Thank you guys, I'll be back soon. Hang in there," he added, looking directly into Pete's eyes while handing him and Patrick a water bottle. The lyricist smiled a little then sunk deeper into his seat. Dan and Kenny were sitting a little bit away from Theo, giving him space but staying there just in case. Brendon decided to save that group for last.
"Hey, how are you guys holding up?" he asked to Tyler and Josh as they leaned against the wall and were quietly talking. "I think we're okay. How are the kids?" Tyler asked, staring just past Brendon's shoulder. "They seem to be okay right now. I haven't seen the doctors yet." Ty bobbed his head up and down before looking down at his feet. "I'm going to go get some coffee." he said before wandering off. Josh's eyes followed him then looked back over to the worried father. "He's scared to lose her." Brendon nodded then hugged Josh. "We all are I think, just no one wants to say it. But, she'll be okay."
"I don't know Brendon. This is a lot to take in for anyone. And after Pete tackled them and before Dallon and them got the kids inside, I heard Eva apologize to Alex. She feels bad for something, and I can't help but worry that it's going to make all of her recovery much, much harder." Brendon let the words flip around in his mind. Eva is the only person who would feel guilty for getting shot by someone else's crazy father, but it does sound so much like her. Brendon could already tell that Eva was starting to slip again, but he hoped Theo and all of her friends being around could help. "I'll keep an eye out for anything. Thank you Josh, and watch Tyler. He looks bad." The drummer nodded like everyone else had done a million times that night then walked to the cafeteria to find his friend. Finally, Brendon took a deep breath then walked to his drummer and guitarist who were carefully observing Theo. "Is everyone okay over here?" he asked them, stealing a glance at Theo as well. "It's bad B. I think Theo needs to see them before he just gives up all hope." Brendon frowned. "I don't think he's allowed until they're cleared. Just, please, keep and eye on him while I figure everything out."
"B, are you okay?" Kenny asked, now observing the antsy singer. "I will be when they are both perfectly fine." Kenny nodded and placed his hand comfortingly on Brendon's shoulder. Brendon walked over to Theo and just sat with him. They didn't talk or move. They both just sat there until Theo broke the silence. "I don't want to lose either of them, but this is going to hurt them both more than we can tell." Brendon was taken back by the sudden burst of wisdom from such a young kid. But, he was right. "I know Theo, but we will get there. I know we will."
"She's lost so much weight, and I know she's slipping. I heard the two of them go outside and I followed them to join when I heard them talking. She doesn't want me to worry, but she's getting bad again. And Alex doesn't have parents anymore. What will he do? He refuses to believe that they really didn't want the best for them." Theo was starting to lose his breath and his words were getting faster. Brendon grabbed the boy and hugged him once again, waiting until his breathing was more even. "We will take it one step at a time Theo." He nodded and leaned back to his spot on the window sill. Talking to Theo did make Brendon worry more. He didn't realize how much change she really had gone through on tour and he immediately felt like a bad dad for not taking much notice. At least noticing the extent.
Brendon returned to the room to find Andy sitting and talking to Alex while Sarah laid in bed with Eva, petting her hair and whispering to her. When Sarah saw her husband, she sat up from the bed and walked him outside into the hall. "Quick recovery apparently. The mental trauma will be the worst of it. Also, Eva's weight was a really big concern." He looked inside through the windows of the room at his beautiful daughter. She was slipping away right in front of their eyes. Brendon saw her staring at her arms that had to be exposed for the machines. Tears were brimming her eyes. "They both need to go into surgery to get the bullets out but there's only one in Eva's shoulder that should be easy to get out and one in Alex's calf that also has easy access. They'll be out by tomorrow." Brendon nodded and brought Sarah into his chest comfortingly.
"The food is something we will figure out later," he said to her quietly. He felt his wife nod into his chest. "Go get some coffee and see some of the guys. I'll stay with her until they go into surgery." Sarah smiled and walked down the hallway as Brendon hesitantly walked into the room and sat next to his now sleeping daughter. Her arms were folded strategically against her chest. Brendon reached over and stroked her arm gently. "God E, what are we going to do?" he asked the empty space between them.
