Luke POV

I’m outside on the balcony with my third glass of champagne really wishing I had something stronger. The entire meeting was a lot more draining than I had anticipated, what with the amount of questions I had to answer and hands I had to shake. All I want to do right now is run away at full force into the below forest without a backwards glance and hunt down some rogues, possibly get some answers to my unanswered questions. I shake my head trying to clear it and take a finishing swig of the glass’s contents before crashing it at my feet, glass shards scattering on the floor beneath my feet.

“You shouldn’t litter like that, even if you are upset.” I start a little at the voice but otherwise don’t even bother to turn around as Zayne saddles up beside me leaning his back against the railing that I have my arms resting on.

“I wasn’t upset. Just….pissed,” I amend.

“Which is just a less fancy word for upset,” he counters. He takes a sip of his glass, his eyes focusing on the remaining members still inside the meeting hall.

I shrug. “Whatever. Maybe you’re right,” I sigh. “I just hate being so...so fucking useless!” I growl, smashing my fist on the railing, dangerously shaking the entire balcony.

In the next instances I feel a welcomed tingly sensation worm it’s way from my forearm straight to my heart. My wolf instantly calms and starts purring in contentment, all aggravation forgotten.

“How do you know what I need even before I know what I need? Is it a mate thing?” I whisper, not really looking for an answer while covering his hand with my own and squeeze it tightly expecting he’ll try to jerk from my grasp.

To my surprise his hold on my arm only gets tighter and he moves closer to me, his body flush to my side now and it just feels so right. “Yeah. It might just be a ‘mate’ thing…” he murmurs softly resting his forehead on my shoulder. We become immersed in our own little world and I wish we could stay like this forever; just us and the forest below.

We stand there for what seems like hours before Zayne lifts his head and gently pulls on my arm to grab my full attention. “I...uh, I mean...who was….” he struggles to speak but I already know what he’s about to ask.

“You’re wondering who that girl was from earlier, right?”

He says nothing not even making eye contact with me, just continuing to stare at his hand that is still trapped under mines, but a faint nod causes me to smile a little at how adorable he is right now. “Her name’s Amethyst and she’s a childhood friend that I hadn’t seen or heard from since she moved to France when I was 11. I was as shocked to see her as you were, believe me.”

“Oh, I highly doubt that,” I hear Zayne murmur.

I release his hand that’s still gripping my forearm and tentatively brush the back of my hand against his face, my thumb rubbing tiny circles on his cheek. “Don’t be like this, Zayne. You know how I feel about you, don’t you?”

He pouts endearingly looking up at me through his eyelashes. “No, I don’t. Since somebody refuses to acknowledge me publicly to his family and friends. Instead, I’m left feeling like your bastard love-child or a stray dog that you throw a bone to occasionally. If you insist on keeping me in the dark and away from public eye, how am I ever supposed to feel certain in my position as your lover and mate?”

His cute pout has turned into an angry sneer by the end of his rant but I still want to kiss him nevertheless. My mirror-heart in his chest must have given my intentions away because he squeezes my cheeks together roughly with his free hand. “Don’t you dare, you horn-dog!” he growls, threateningly.
