The last of the crew was gone, only the ship and I remained.
With the new course programmed in, the limping behemoth came about, I could feel the kick of her massive engines as she accelerated forwards once more.
The gap between my enemy and I closed quickly, leaving little time to think, for that I’ m glad.
The point of no return had passed but fear did not grip me as I thought it would, only sadness.
Sadness that I would never see my dearest wife again.
I tried to picture her face but the screams of the Moonlight Sky distracted me.
She writhed in the pain I had caused her, the dull thuds of my enemy’s weapons echoed throughout the empty vessel.
They held nothing back and I had nothing to return but for one last act.
My crew had reached safety so I set Moonlight Sky’s power core to overload.
I could almost feel the build up of energy somewhere deep within the depths of the ship below me.
Warning lights flashed all around me so I closed my eyes once more trying to picture my dearest.
In my last breath her face appeared to me.
In my last moment her voice spoke to me.
Fire tore through me, returning my body to dust but not before I saw her smile.
