He doesn't know why he's so obsessed with it.
But he is, and so that's why we have this story, and that's why his fate is a horrible as it is.
From a young age he can remember being fascinated with ghosts, and from an older age biology, and from an age after that, a combination of the two.
Also from a young age he can remember his vision being constantly invaded by things other people couldn't see, things with blood leaking from their mouths and onto their furry black bodies, people he could see through, things with one too many eyes and horrible clever smirks like they knew a devastating secret about him that he had no way of knowing.
As he grew older and began to see more and more things others couldn't see and began to understand more and more about the living world, he wanted to know about the dead and demonic. He wanted to prove he wasn't crazy as everyone said he was, he wanted to prove the supernatural with science. He wanted to understand, and for others to also understand. He wanted to understand it all, completely.
Unfortunately, when he met the fortune teller, he took his quest for understanding a bit too far, and so the terror began.
