‘Mo! So glad you could make it.’
‘Yeah, same here’, I mumble in response.
Sophie flashes me her biggest fake smile and ushers me inside. I’ll give her this, Sophie can throw an amazing party but parties were never really my scene. The only reason I’m even here is because my best friends threated to throw me in loner rehab. Their definition; I will have to live in a prison where I have to party 24-7. As that is physically impossible for me to do, I decided I could live through hanging at Sophie’s 16th birthday party for a little while.
‘Hey has Moira turned up yet?’
‘Anyone seen Mo?’
God help me. As if it weren’t embarrassing enough to be the school nerd at the most exclusive party of the year my friends had to be calling out loud enough for heaven and hell to hear. Just as I’m about to find somewhere to hide, Kate spots me.
‘Hey Liz, I found her.’
‘About bloody time, I could have finished 3 cups of beer in the time it took you to find her.’
Walking straight over Liz looks me up and down. She’s wearing a red cocktail dress that shows off all her curves, and the biggest pair of black heels I have ever seen. It’s mind boggling how she can walk in them.
‘Mo! This is the most exclusive party of the year. Everyone here has dressed up including Kate. Why have you only shown up in a t-shirt, jeans and flats?’
The annoyance in her voice is so thick we could have cut it up, packaged it and gave it to the hungry.
Liz is the beauty of our little trio. She gets invited to all the parties and drags Kate and me along. Kate and I are the class geeks. Straight A students that are always studying and kind of Loners. Then Liz the new girl came and she was gorgeous. Everyone thought so except Sophie. Sophie was so jealous of Liz that she got her posse to embarrass Liz at the freshman dance last year.
Despite having her dress nearly chopped to pieces Liz held her head high walked over to Sophie and hit her right in the face, her nerve took everyone by surprise. She then walked out of the dace without saying a word. The look on Sophie’s face that night was priceless.
Any ways after that Liz started hanging out Kate and I trying to keep her head down because, besides being beautiful Liz was brilliant. Some girls just get everything.
‘Mo! Mo! Are you listening? You better have something to change into.’
I’m zapped back to the present, to Liz’s death stare. If only looks could kill this party would be over now.
I sigh, ‘No I don’t’ have anything to change of clothes. Remember the only reason I’m here is because you guys threated to have me thrown into party rehab.’
‘Correction’, Kate cuts in ‘you wouldn’t be thrown into party rehab because then you wouldn’t party. It’s like saying you go to drug rehab to get addicted to drugs’
‘OK whatever’, I exclaim.
I look at Liz and she’s rummaging inside her hand bag. I shouldn’t ask, I know I shouldn’t ask, it can only lead to bad news (for me) but curiosity gets the better of me and I ask, ‘Hey Liz what ya doing?’
Liz lifts her head and gives me a devilish grin. Why? Why couldn’t I have just kept my mouth shut?
‘Well seen as how I’m brilliant, I thought you wouldn’t come dressed appropriately for a party so I took the liberty of bringing a dress for you.’
I so wish I could wipe that smug grin right off Liz’s face but there is no way I can take her so I just sigh.
‘God give me strength. What hell on earth did you bring for me to wear?’
