My Only Chance

There's word of the Spartan General Kratos calling upon Ares for help. To destroy his enemies. The cost? His freedom. The barbarians waging war on Sparta, brutally murdering my mother. I've no information on who my father is. My mother always told me he was watching me, making sure no harm came to me, that I was a special child that had the attention of the Gods.

I think the gods had abandoned me that day. My mother's entrails carved out in front of me. My older sisters dignity taken from her over and over, repeatedly. Me, held down forced to watched being reminded by the large man that this was my fate if I didn't go with.

Outside the window of my home, I saw the General, Kratos, remove the head of the leader of the men who destroyed my family. Kratos saw me in the house by myself and came in. Frightened, I hid behind my mother's lifeless body, tears streaming down my face. The barbarian that was once in my home, left once his leader was killed. Kratos, only 19 at the time, had an infant. A child of his own. My 12 year old self unable to comprehend the fact that my mother was dead and couldn't protect me anymore, I screamed out to her. For her embrace.

It was no longer warm like a mother's embrace should be. It was cold, lifeless, that of a corpse. I tried my sister. Her lifeless body torn in two. I then turned to Kratos. Tears still rolling down my face, he held open his arms. I ran into them, feeling comfort. Safety. There, I made my vow. I made it to him, to the gods, to myself. I vowed to never let any man to make me feel weak and helpless, to make me feel fear. I vowed to fight for the ones I protect. I vowed I wouldn't just be a home maker, but I'd be a warrior.

With that, he smiled. Told me to fight for what I want and I'd get it.

Five years later, along the border of Athens and Sparta, I saw a God for the very first time. This, is where my story begins. This is where I finally see Kratos again. This is where I prove I'm no longer helpless.
