" I think you've packed for a year!" My dad exclaims while trying to zip up my over-stuffed suit case
"You never know what you may need" and in my defence that was true, I'd checked the whether and it seemed to fluctuate between rain and scorching sunshine. I'd also gone to the shopping outlet and bought a load of XS clothes to motivate myself to get into shape. It's one of those things I seem to say most years, but it never works out the way I intend it to and like every year I will say " this year it will be different"- but it will. I will live on some sort of kale juice and go for a run in the morning.
"Well I hope it passes the weight limit"
"What?" I say through my clouded thought
"The suit case" my dad furthers while exhaling a load thunderous breath
"It better" I mutter as my father leaves my bedroom to shout at my sister. mum is the leader of our family, she knows everything and can practically do anything, which is the polar opposite of my dad who is very laid back and does the occasional shouting match with my difficult little sister about her clothes infested bedroom floor. My parents met in Secondary school and got married when they found out my mum was knocked up, 9 months later my older brother Jamie was born and 20 years after that, we are visiting him in Seattle were he lives with his American boyfriend- Joe. Jamie went to America as he was offered a scholarship to play soccer and a year later he came back home with "news" as he put it.
We all thought he'd knocked up some girl, dad joked about it being a curse on our family which you can probably tell didn't go down well with my mum, but how we were wrong. You see Jamie doesn't look like a typical gay guy, neither does Joe really, they look like normal "lads" as my dad says, but I guess that's just my dad being stupid and uncomfortable about the situation. We were just surprised mostly and happy for him of course. Mum said she knew all along, but I think she says that because she feels guilty for not knowing.
For the summer we are staying with Joes family, Jamie says they're loaded and have like 20 spare bedroom so we're being cheeky and staying with them for 2 weeks. They haven't told us much, but joe has a big family with 7 siblings in total. In ways I'm excited to meet them all after all in a couple of years they could be part of my family,but knowing myself I will only come out of my shell on the last couple of days and then we'll be gone, so I better make this summer count.
