I looked around me. This wasn't my house, nor was this my room. I was laying on a metal bed, it had a mattress covered in a plain white sheet. What am I doing here?
Then I remembered what had happened the night before. There was a knock at the door. My family and I were sitting at our table eating our dinner. I looked up. My father rose from his seat, and walked across the room, he took a deep breath. Then turned the brass handle on the old wooden door. It squeaked open I held my breath. My mother gasped, and whispered something to my older brother, Amir. He looked startled for a second, I froze. Then he got up and half dragged me towards the cellar. But not before I saw who was at the door. It was two men. Two men in navy blue uniform. Holding shiny silver objects. Then I realised that these men were not friendly visitors.
Our cellar was dark and cold, none of us had been in it for years. I looked at my brother, and opened my mouth to ask him a question. But he held a quivering finger up to his lips. I felt my hands shaking. I could hear people yelling. As well our our old wooden floor creaking as people moved. Everything in our house was old, it had been standing for generations. I felt something cold drop onto my bare legs. My shaking hand rose to my face and wiped tears from my eyes. I hadn't realised that I had been crying, or that my lips were trembling.
Then I heard the noise I had been dreading since I had entered the cellar.
A loud bang.
A scream.
And the sobs that followed.
I looked at my brother with a questioning gaze, he nodded.
I may only be 13, but I knew.
I screamed.
Amir crawled over to me. He hugged me, doing his best to comfort me. But it was no use.
It was there were I wondered what the point of life was. And why I even bothered tryingI pushed a plain blanket off of me, wiping tears from my eyes. I walked over to a mirror that was hung on the wall across from my bed. My long brown hair fell loseley down to my waist, in tight curls. I was wearing a white T-shirt and grey shorts. I pulled my hair into a knot, and wrapped a hair tie around it. I looked around the room. There were four plain white walls surrounding me. Another metal bed with plain a sheet and blanket, it had a small white table next to it with a plain white picture frame but I didn't bother looking at the picture. It had two plain cupboards, one with clothes hanging out and another clean. Everything about this room was plain. No decoration, no nothing. Just plain.
I could tell that I was sharing the room with another girl, my first piece of evidence was the hairbrush with blonde hairs stuck in it on the table next to the other bed. The second was the cupboard with girls clothes sticking out. I heard a noise coming from the door, the door I hadn't yet realised was there. The door that looked like it was made of iron...
That's weird...
I ran back to the bed I had woken up in and jumped in, pulling the plain blanket over me. The silver door handle turned, and a girl with short blonde hair who was dressed in all black, walked in. I blinked a couple of times, trying my hardest to make it look like I had just woken up. "Oh good, you're awake." the girl said, she had a sweet voice. "My name's Evelyn, are you Adira?" I nodded, not wanting to talk. "You need to get dressed and then come to the courtyard. Your clothes are in there." she pointed to the non messy cupboard, and then walked out of the room. "I'll wait for you outside." I nodded, then walked over to the cupboard, and was surprised to find that all of the clothes were black. I picked out a pair of leggings and a plain shirt with lace at the bottom.
