Valkyrie woke up. She saw a baby in front of her.

"Alice!" she cried happily. She tried to crawl over to her, but just as she touched her, she got an extremely strong electric shock. She cried out and the door flung open.

"Hello, Valkyrie," Tanith Low smirked. Valkyrie lunged at her and got another electric shock, flinging her back.

"I... see you've... got some new... security," Valkyrie said, in pain.

Tanith laughed. "Yes, we do actually." She scooped up Alice.

"You let go of Alice," Valkyrie growled.

Tanith shook her head mockingly. "Tut tut, Valkyrie. I would have expected some manners."

She held up her sword and Valkyrie screamed.

"If you want your sister so badly," Tanith smirked, "Say please."

"Give her back!"

The sword moved closer to Alice's neck. She started crying.

Valkyrie swallowed.

"Please," she whispered.

Tanith lowered the sword. "That's better. But your bad manner can't be unpunished,"

And Tanith walked out the door with Alice, flinging the door in Valkyrie's face.

Skulduggery Pleasant kicked Billy Ray Sanguine in the chest and he was flung back. He grimaced and burrowed under the ground. Skulduggery stood warily, expecting Sanguine to jump up behind him. Instead, he heard a cry. Valkyrie. He ran inside the warehouse.

"Valkyrie!" he called. He saw Tanith Low walking towards him. She hadn't seen him yet. She had a baby in her hands. Skulduggery's jaw clenched. It was Alice. He ducked into a room and looked out. He wassurprised at how gentle Tanith was being with Alice. She was tickling her. Alice was laughing and

gurgling. Then Skulduggery barged through and jumped on Tanith, making sure Alice didn't get hurt.

Tanith cried out and grasped Alice close. "Get away from my sister!" she cried. Skulduggery stopped. "Sister?"

Tanith's face crumpled. "Please..." she whispered.

Suddenly they both heard a loud crash. Tanith screamed and held Alice tightly as Darquesse came down the hallway on a wave of shadows.

"How did Valkyrie... She's not that experenced yet!" Tanith asked hurridly.

Skulduggery stood up slowly. "That's not Valkyrie,"

Tanith understood immediately. She cradled Alice and took deep breaths. Alice was wailing, and Tanith tried desperately to calm her down.

Darquesse looked at Tanith holding Alice and she looked surprised. She closed her eyes and fell to the ground. Valkyrie ran over to Tanith. She pulledher arm back to punch and then Skulduggery held it. "Talk to her," he whispered.

Tanith closed her eyes and Valkyrie swore she saw a tear. "Take Alice," she said, her voice shaking. She held Alice out. Valkyrie took her.

"... Thank you."

Tanith smiled weakly. "That's what sisters are for, right?"

She jumped onto the ceiling and suddenly Tanith Low was gone.
