Chapter Four- Jane
“You are on an unmarked road.”
“Yeah, so you keep telling me,” I hissed at the GPS system in my car. I had typed in the address to the Rave Ranch once Grace and I had finally reached Cody, Wyoming. It had taken us about four days to finally arrive at Cody. Not to mention the bathroom breaks, stopping to eat at fast food restaurants and either finding a motel to stay at or just finding a place to park the car and sleep in it. The trip had taken its toile on both of us and I was looking forward to finally reaching the ranch.
I had worried about Grace and whether or not she would feel okay throughout the long haul. I had debated about flying to Wyoming but Grace insisted that we drive. She wanted to look at the changing landscape, from rolling hills to the monster mountains, as she put it.
From the minute I told Grace where I was taking her she seemed to act more like her old, healthy self. Dr. Martin seemed to notice it too and was happy to see Grace leave in that state of elatedness. It didn’t take us long to pack up our belongings, say our good-byes to Anne, and hit the road. Now here we were, in Cody, Wyoming, and I couldn’t find the Rave Ranch.
“You are on an unmarked road.” The GPS’s woman, robot voice said yet again.
“Good Lord!” I yelled, “Stupid technology. It works just fine until you really need to use it.” I motioned toward my dashboard where the GPS system sat.
Grace giggled, “Oh Mommy.”
I looked over at her and smiled. She wore her red bandana to cover up her bare head. Her big blue eyes stood out from her pale skin. She was growing up to be such a beautiful young lady.
My smile faltered at that thought, knowing she might not grow up much longer.
“Mom, what’s wrong?” Grace questioned.
“Nothing sweetheart,” I shook those awful thoughts out of my head and cursed at myself. I was not going to lose my daughter.
I pulled back onto the dirt road and continued on our way.
“Mom, do you have any idea where we are?”
I looked around at the empty pastures that stretched on for miles and miles. “No idea Gracie.”
“Maybe we should call Jessica, the lady that owns the ranch.”
Goodness, I didn’t even think about calling Jess and asking for directions! I really needed to get a full nights rest.
“Wow Gracie, I think I am losing it.” I kept my eyes on the road and reached for my purse which contained my cell phone.
“Here mommy let me look for it.” Grace lifted my big purse off the floor and rummaged through it. “I don’t see it.”
“Its go to be in there somewhere.” I looked over to search for it.
“Mom look out!” Grace screamed.
I quickly looked up, slammed on the brakes, and threw my free arm over Grace. The car skidded to a stop on the dirt road. Dust consumed our car on the outside, so I couldn’t see what Grace had saw that I had just about hit. When the dust slowly drifted away my mouth dropped at what was in front of us.
“Oh my gosh,” Grace whispered.
Walking, no more than 20 feet away from my little car, was a herd of horses. They were crossing the road and were heading towards a hidden drive way.
The horses ranged from dark browns to a creamy color to even colorful paints. They swished their long flowing tails as they bobbed their heads with every step they took. All of them were well built from what I could tell and watching them interact with each other as they slowly crossed the road was one of the most beautiful sights I had ever seen.
