Prologue
It was a warm summer day in Ohio. The prairie grass looked golden as the bright sun. It was finally setting after the long day. "Mamma!" A voice shouted. A little girl with dark brown hair and hazel eyes came running through the field. "Hello, darling." Said her mother. She also had dark black hair and also hazel eyes. She smiled curiously. "Where did you go?" She asked the little girl. "Exploring." The girl answered, beaming with energy. She was always like this. "Ahh. dinner is ready dearest."The little girl followed behind the women, holding her hand. Their home was tiny, but not too small. It was red, with a brown roof. The door was green and lived somewhat (about a mile) near the woods. After their dinner, a man came home to his wife. "I'm home!" He shouted from the door. "Welcome home." The woman said. She hugged him for a minute,
Then whispered in his ear. "Ellie.."The man smiled then nodded "Hey kiddo!" He shouted happily. The little girl came running from her bedroom door. "Daddy! Your home! Let's go play!" The mother shook her head laughing. "She loves you so much, you know." The man turned to her. "Go." She whispered once more. "Go play." He smiled warmly at her. " Roar! I coming to get you!" He said in a low monster voice. The little girl screamed and laughed playfully as her father came running after her. A few times, the girl and her father would color on her white wall, using Crayola brand crayons. Her father even agreed to play Barbies with the sweet little girl. When night neared, she came up to her mother crying. "Mamma! There's a monster under my bed!" The girl sobbed as her mother picked her 7-year-old daughter up, rocking her back in forth, singing. "Hush my child doesn't say a word, Mamas taking care of her little girl, When the night is coming near, you don't have to fear, The...." So on. The girl slept the night peacefully, with no problems, no worries.......
TutoringIt was 5:00 pm at the Marion Dowson library. (Where I was tutored.) Dad said my math class grade needed to be better, In order for me to pass 6th grade. Hey, I bet you don't get in trouble for a B+ on your final exam. It has to be "Perfect". I just feel left out. Of everything. Even in my own family I feel left out. To be praised! Just one time wouldn't hurt.
"Ms. Hoy, any questions, concerns.. nothing?" Mia asked, completely popping my thought bubble. I nodded slowly as if she was mental.
Mia was a smart high school girl, (Typical), who tutored me after school every Monday-Thursday."Emily.... Your father just wants you to be....." Her voice trailed off like she was worried. "Be what? Perfect? And It's Ellie, not Emily by the way." I muttered. My name actually was Emily, but my mom used to call me that. It's always hard- the memories of my mom. "And only one person can call me Emily." I said to remind her. Then a honk came from outside the library. It was my Dad. Everyday besides Friday and the weekend, dad would park there, on the curve, waiting. Waiting for a smile on my face. "Have a nice night...." Mia sighed. Silence. Deep Silence. No one spoke.
As I left the library, I noticed my dad was parked right where he always did. "Hey, kiddo! How was school? Good day?" What is with these people?! My day was not good, not perfect, not okay. "Fine..." I replied kind of sluggish. As I sat uncomfortably in the front seat, I noticed a pair of purple headphones peeking out of my bag. Yes! A chance of freedom, like a getaway. I slid them on listening to the quiet, peaceful country music that was playing. I just love looking out the car window as we passed by. The bright blue sky, warm weather, and watching the white fluffy clouds float heavily across the beautiful world. It reminds me of those good old days. Sitting by the fireplace, and being read to by mom. I actually smiled for the first time since- wait never mind. The idea isn't important. Let's focus. "Did tutoring go pretty well today?" Dad asked politely. No answer.
"Did tutoring go WELL TODAY?!" He asked me once more. Still, no reply. "EMILY !!!" He shouted. Dad yanked off my headphones and threw them back towards the trunk. " You need to focus what's around you, not in your head!" I stared at him blankly. " Why do you hate me!" I screamed. " Pull over," I said angrily. Here it comes. "What?!" He asked astonished. "Pull OVER, NOW," I said once more. It's getting worse." I can walk home from here." Dad slammed the brakes of exhaustion. I opened the door quickly, running the opposite direction. "ELLIE!!!" My dad shouted. There's no turning back now. This is worse.
