Mama said we were going somewhere special together with Daddy today. It's Friday and I'm tired not really interested, although I was slightly confused at the sound of those words, you see, we haven't been anywhere for a while now, ever since a few months ago. I figured it was because this week was important. This week is my birthday. Tomorrow to be precise.
Daddy helped me get into the back seat and I scurried hurriedly in. Mama was already inside and gave me the strangest look. I was again, perplexed and quickly I connected my seat belt and waited for Daddy to start the car.
Mama then asked Daddy, "do you have it? Are we ready?"
"Of course I do," Daddy responded, he then turned and looked at me as well with a funny looking face.
I sat lost. Had I done something wrong? Mama then smiled and took a bag from Daddy as she brushed his cheek. I assumed everything was fine and began to imagine what they could have possibly had planned.
We were driving for quite some time when I woke up from my nap. We kept going until we reached a scary looking place that I have never seen before. It was a vacant street, no street lights to be seen, no people outside, it was a ghost town. How far were we and why?
"Mama?" I said, "Where are we?"
Mama turned to face me and took a moment before she spoke, "We are here."
Here? I thought in bewilderment. I didn't ask more and nodded.
Daddy opened my door and Mama followed behind him. The streets looked sinister to me, like a scene taken from a horror movie and brushed into reality. The place even had fog and silhouettes of the abandoned buildings lurking. Maybe we were going to play a game! Oh the joy that rushed through me. A tidal wave of mystery entered my mind eagerly.
"MAMA, MAMA, MAMA!" I jumped, "I know what we are doing! A GAME!"
"Shhh," Daddy shushed me at once. I lowered my head, I don't like when he does that. I know he wasn't trying to be mean but I don't like it.
"Come" Daddy held my hand and Mama's too. We walked into the mist, our surroundings are in brilliant hues of sapphire, midnight, and navy blues, all mystifying me at once.
Mama had the bag in her hands and gave it back to Daddy without any words. I looked around and I could not see where we had come from. The car was nowhere! Had it disappeared?
"Daddy. The car. It's GONE!"
"Be quiet child!"
"But. The Ca--
"Listen to your father!"
I knew at once something wasn't right. I didn't notice when I began to shake and whimper like a little puppy. Then I saw what was inside the bag. I have never seen one in real life but I knew enough from movies to understnd what they did. Why did Daddy and Mama have one?
"Mama!" I shouted with a voice I didn't recognize as my own.
It was too late. There was a loud sound that came from it, a loud boom. Then I felt like something pinched me. But when I looked down at myself there was a rush of a red color that didn't match with my shirt. I fell. I wanted to yell but I couldn't. Something, maybe the pain stopped me.
Mama, why didn't you stop daddy when he pointed it at me? Why did you clap? Mama, why did you smile? And kiss Daddy on the cheek, hugging him? Why Mama?
Daddy? Didn't you love me? I thought you did. But why? But why, Daddy?
He walked slowly up to me. I couldn't move or talk, I wanted to run or to ask him why but I couldn't. He knelt down beside me with a terrifying smile and brushed my hair. Strange. I couldn't feel it. He then lowered his head to my shaking body and whispered into my ear.
"Happy Birthday." Daddy finally said to me. Then someone turned off the lights and the world was gone.
I was only three.
