A planetary cataclysm has wiped out the majority of humanity. A great power has awakened deep within the Earth, which drove every wild animal berserk. Twenty-eight years after the event, many species of animal have mutated into monstrous killing machines, and humans have been forced to defend themselves by building walls around the remains of once-great cities. Joshua Zihark serves one such city as a wall scout, along with his friends Seth Nielon and Mia Nabetto. The job of a wall scout is to patrol outside the cities and destroy any creatures roaming too close. But when Joshua, Seth, and Mia watch as another group of scouts is eradicated, they each come to their own idea about the state of the world. Joshua leaves his companions to follow his ideals, but how will this change the relationship of the trio? And what will happen when one person tries to harness the power that took so many lives twenty-eight years in the past?
