Seven - Tick Tock Tick Tock

The rest of the day passed slowly, or maybe it was just me being paranoid about my miserable life. Maybe it was just me counting down the time on my fingers until I had to return to Danny's side. Holly kept looking at me all the way through English Language, and finally came up to me at the end of the day. I was stood next to the iron railings, twisting my fingers around them, kicking the stone at my foot, delaying the moment until I had to get on the bus.

"Hey," Holly said, flicking her blonde hair over her shoulder as she appeared at my side.

"What do you want?" I snapped. Holly raised her hands in mock defence.

"Look Becky, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been so mean to you earlier." Holly raked her hand through her long, thick hair. She had it cut a while ago into a shoulder length bob, but now she was growing it out again. My anger with her melted away.

"It's okay," I smiled, "I guess I'm at fault too."

Holly sighed with relief, and giggled. "It's so good to hear you say that!" She held out her hand for a high five, and we started to do the handshake we made up in Year Seven. Some Year 9's walked past and looked alarmed at the sight of Holly and I trying to fit our fists in our mouths.

"It's okay!" Holly called after them, "She's got issues!" She jabbed a finger in my direction. I mock shoved her in the shoulder as the bus engines steamed at us, and Holly and I covered our mouths with our hands.

"Come on!" Holly linked her arm through mine. "We're going to miss the bus!"

I felt so much better than I had half an hour, lighter somehow. It felt so good to be squashed next to Holly on the bus, chattering away about idle stuff, like what colour nail varnish I had just bought, and Holly's latest crush on the captain of the football team which turned out to be - gulp - Jack. I wondered why I didn't tell her about my encounter with him in the PE cupboard. I guess I didn't want to upset her.

"Anyway, I hear Jack has a crush on this girl -" Holly drew a deep breath, "and apparently I know her really well!" She clapped her hands excitedly, ignoring the snorts of derision from the back row of goth Year 11's, who were showing each other the scars they had made with their compasses.

"Do you think it's me?" Holly asked.

"If it isn't, then he doesn't know what he's missing babe." I tried to smile as Holly grinned, and hugged me, and said I was the best friend in all the world. When Holly had hopped off the bus at the second stop, it got harder to ignore the whispers and smothered laughs behind me from Lola and her cronies, and I hurried off at the next stop. I had just jumped off when I realised that I was close to Danny's house. Too close. He would see me, grab me and take me in his house. And then I would be trapped. I turned around to run after the bus, but it was already a speck in the distance.
