In the dark, I hear them. The voices in the night.
Even in the darkest nights, I hear them. They talk in small whispers among themselves, ignoring their surroundings and everything that exists in the world. I don't know what they are but something about them is unnatural. I saw through them as if they weren't there. As if they were phantoms or apparitions arising from the dark. The only sign they were there was the thin outline of them white and wispy like smoke. I can only fathom they were ghost, only that wasn't what they were. They are beautiful and mystical, I want to near one and maybe listen in to their conversations but I know better.
Suddenly there's a noise. No. It wasn't me. It was outside somewhere in the blackness that is unknown to me. I like the sun, the light that illuminates versus the mysteries that the night may hold. Yet here I was, watching these strange creatures. The sound started again and harsher. The creatures look up and in that instance, I can see them ripple into a figure that isn't human nor from our Earth. They are monstrous and I try to look away, yet, I can't.
Long jaws dangle like an angler fish's, their many eyes bulging from their sockets, dark and large with little amber rings. The eyes are what caught my attention, in the middle of the little rings I see a white pupil, acute and small, I don't know if they had seen me but I want to say not. They are all lined neatly the largest two in front and the smallest where a human's temples are. The shapes float and glide like jellyfish in the deep blue sea.
The noise is heard again. Out comes a cat, our neighbor's cat. One of the creatures approaches it hurriedly and catches the frightened feline. It scoops it up with arms that had not been there moments before and seems to examine it closely.
I watch in dread as I see the tabby disappear into the figure's largemouth. The cries pained me, knowing I could do nothing. It whines and screeches until I hear a crack. nothing more followed except for my breathing and heaving chest containing my beating heart.
I turned around meaning to go up the stairs and into my room hoping it would all pass as a nightmare and I'd never see them again. And then clear as glass, right in front of me, they were there.
They smiled. And I knew I had lost as soon as I felt my feet leave the ground.
