Gabe's point of view

Hey, yo. My name is Gabriel Garica, but a lot of people just call me "Gabe". I'm gonna tell you a story of a big brother who'd protect his little sister from bullies no matter what. This'll be a story of bravery, kindness, and love.

My sister Marianna and I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. A land that's a big city, but perhaps a land that is known for their art museums.

Interview style

David (Gabe and Marianna's father): Y'know I had Marianna and Gabe in a previous marriage. My second wife, Kate is their stepmother. I used to be married to a girl named Luisa, but she left for Mexico, because she wanted to be closer to her family, and I get that.

Javier (Gabe and Marianna's uncle): David has been here in the state of Maryland his whole life, but I was actually born in Puerto Rico. It actually worked out really well, because I'm a professional baseball player, and I was drafted to the Baltimore Orioles. When I went over to Baltimore that's when David and I would go to all these great art museums here, well, we still do.

Gabe's point of view

It was the year 2001. It was a Wednesday in June. The last week of school. I was in seventh grade, going into eighth grade the next year. I was stuck with two things at once. Number one: this girl named Clementine Marsh really liked me, and number two: Marianna was being bullied all throughout that school year. She was in elementary school at the time, fourth grade I think she was in.

Interview style

Clementine (Gabe's wife): Gabe and I were friends back then, but he's so sweet and nice, that I wanted our realtionship to be more than what it was. So right before our first hour class that day, I put a note on Gabe's desk. When he got in the room, he saw it. It said "Will you go out with me?" He instantly knew it was me who asked this. At lunch later that day, he gave me back the note, and he said "Yes" on it. Sorry if I'm crying, but that was one of the happiest days of my life.

Gabe's point of view

I bet you're thinking that day was all pride and joy, but it really wasn't. Right after that moment with Clementine, Marianna came rushing into the lunchroom.

"¡Hermano mayor ayúdame!" She screamed.

"¿No se supone que deberías estar en clase?" I questioned her.

"Estamos teniendo un recreo en este momento. De todos modos, necesito tu ayuda. Un niño grande robó mi barra de chocolate. Tenemos el mismo tiempo de recreo que los alumnos de octavo grado. Ayuadame," she told me.

"What'd she say? I only speak English," Clementine mentioned.

"Clem, come with me. Some eighth grader stole Mari's candy bar. We need to get it back for her," I say.

"Okay," Clem replied.

We've got recess right after the fourth and eighth grade, but I'm sure they won't mind if Clementine and I go out there a few minutes early. We go outside, and it's really nice out here.

"Por ahí," Mari tells me. She was telling me where the bully was.

"Don't worry, Mari. It's gonna be okay. Just let your brother handle this, and we'll be fine. I promise you that," Clem tells Mari, to calm her down a bit.

"Thanks, Clem."

"Of course, Marianna."

We go over to the soccer fields, 'cause that's where the bully is. I know who it is. It was Max, alright. He stole Mari's candy bar.

I walk up to him. Clementine and Mari are behind me. Clem is holding Mari's hand, and Mari hides behind Clementine.

"Hey!" I yell at Max.

"The hell do you want, Gabe?" Max asked.

"You've got something that belongs to my sister," I inform him.

"Yeah, so what? It's just a dollar chocolate bar," Max stated.

"Give that back to her! It's for my little sister! She loves chocolate more than anything!" I bark.

"Give it back to her now, Max." I order.

"What's the magic word?" Max questioned.

"Give it back to her please," I say.

"No, I won't," He says. He turns his head twords Clem.

"And who's this fine skank?" Max wondered.

"Um, excuse me?" Clem asked, sounding confused. Max reaches his hand out to her, but I put it down.

"Don't you touch her," I say to him. Max chuckles to himself, and looks at the ground. Then out of nowhere, he fires his fist right into my face. I get knocked flat. I didn't get knocked out though, just knocked down.

"Oh my God, Gabe!" Clem cries out.

"Leave my brother alone!" Mari yelled. Max brings me back up, then he slams me down on a dirt pile. He starts punching me some more.

"Stop it! Leave him alone!" Clem cried. She pushes Max off of me. Max runs away, and goes inside the school.

"Ugh, my head," I say, in pain. Clem brushes some of the dirt off of me, and helps me up.

"C'mon, Gabe. Let's get you to the office. You'll have to go home for the rest of the day," Clem says.  Clementine and Mari walk me in.

"Well, thanks for trying, big brother," Mari tells me, as she smiles at me.

"You're welcome, little sister," I reply, as I smile back.
