It was the sound of glass shattering, and the howl of wind cried of as though of a wolf's in agony that blew goosebumps onto my leather clad limbs. It felt as if some coldblooded, scaled animal had slithered down my spine to writ its intent of warning, insisting I escaped before the materialisation of an impediment could stage an appearance.
My gloved hand immediately halted at an attempt of grasping a handful gems and jewelry, I retracted my arm as a woman's scream rippled through the humid air of the late evening, waking even the farthest of situated guards. I secured that of what i had stolen of tonight into my satchel, I tightened my grip to the strap that draped over my shoulder.
The pounding movement of foot clad in metal aught but shook the very fabric of my being, the alarming sound of the awoken guards gaining pace reverberated through the walls, it raced with the thrumming beat of my heart as it thudded against my chest. It constricted my lungs of air and hindered but a single beat before a sudden jolt of adrenaline pulsed through my veins.
I thrust myself forward, breathing heavily as my knees trembled beneath my stance. Out of the lush, carpeted room fit of but only royalty to step upon, I reached the open window across the hall. I had climbed up to this window to enter, I leaned my chest against to the sill —this now shall the only means of my escape. The sound of feet that padded harshly against the floor were drawn nearer.
As I brought my legs up to sit upon the bottom of the sill, a flicker of light caught my gaze from the corner of my eye. A gush of wind caught the hesitation that pulsed through my veins as my eyes wandered downwards from the length I climbed up, and length I must jump down —it shoved me out of the stone threshold of the kingdom.
