Before it all

"Max! Come inside I got a surprise for you," I screamed from inside. I saw Max running, moving his short legs as fast as possible. "Yes Maddy?" He looked up at me with his big blue eyes, his blonde hair all messed up from playing outside. "Happy birthday little dude!" I took my hands out from behind my back to show a a teddy bear. He squealed with excitement and hugged me. "Thank you Maddy! I love you." I wished him a happy birthday and went up to my room. That day he got some more presents but he loved the bear the most. He named it Scruffy. It was around 4 in the afternoon when the sky went from very bright to pitch black other than lights on. Max got scared and ran to out mom. Max, my mom, my dad, and I all went in the living room. We all sat down talking about the darkness. We turned on the news and listened. "Breaking news today. The world has been covered in darkness. We don't know when the light will be back but we encourage everyone to be in there homes at all times. Thank you this is Marty Don signing off." We look at each other not knowing what to do. We turn on the TV on to cartoons for Max. I go into my room and sketch in my art book. My mom and dad are in there room. As I'm drawing my hand starts shaking. Every thing starts shaking. I look out my window. Everything is dark but I hear a tree fall. From downstairs I hear my mom screaming, "EARTHQUAKE!" I begin the panic and open my door. I run downstairs screaming for my mom and dad. Max is laying down in front of the TV and is bawling his eyes out. I pick him up and run into the basement. Max is crying even more in the basement and I ask him what's wrong. "Sc-Scruf-f-y," he said not able to even keep air in him. "I'll grab him Max it's ok. Everyone stay down here don't come out." My dad opened the basement door and ran. About he longest minute ever passed and he was back with Scruffy. "I am gonna grab some water bottles,canned food, and other things we will need." As he started to walk for the door I grabbed him and gave him a tight hug. He bent down and whispered in my ear "I love you Maddy stay safe." He kissed my forehead and went out.
