He could smell the frost in the air, the jacket around his body barely held in his body heat. His shivering rustled the keys in his pocket, and it calmed him somehow. The sounds of streetlights buzzing along the path were constant. Louder then softer, louder then softer as he passed beneath their glow. Cars were occasionally passing by, stealing the little bit of heat away from him.
A glint of white flashed in the corner of his eye by the lights, he trained his eyes to the sky and saw the flurries briskly flowing harder and harder until they consisted of clumps of snow.
'Great,' he thought. 'now it's snowing.'
He held out his hand to grab the flakes that clumsily spun their way down from the sky. A wisp of flame escaped from his palm. His eyes were slits as he glanced around him. That was a close call. He wiped his hands on his pants and continued on his way home.
The snow began to shift from the clumsy sticky snow to frigid ice crystals and blew in his eyes. He pulled his scarf up and trudged forward.
In the distance, he saw his cherry wood house off in the edge of the woods, so he stepped off from the sidewalk into the bunched piles of snow falling off the trees.
He pulled out his keys and twisted it in the lock, but it was frozen. He hit the lock a couple time again, still frozen. He slipped off his glove and touched the lock for a brief second before it steamed, then glowed almost orange. Key, twist, click, unlocked.
There was a mirror as soon as he came in and he saw in the reflection a dash of light blue far behind him.
'Hmm' he thought, 'must've been a deer.'
He shut the door and set off with taking off his jacket and shoes and sat in his love seat turning to the fireplace and with a snap it lit.
"A great way to spend Christmas eve" he said to no one in particular.
"Quite." A Voice said from out of nowhere.
He jumped up and took a look around his house, was he followed? 'Shit, somebody saw me.' He thought.
Seeing nobody hiding in his living room he pressed to the window, maybe it was from outside? He scanned the forest with his eyes and saw nothing, but just as he was about to turn around, a blue shadowy figure zoomed from a tree to another. He had to squint his eyes to see the faint blue outline behind the vanishing tree.
"Hey you," the blue outline shrunk back behind the tree, "I know you're hiding behind the tree so you need to go before I call the cops."
Hesitantly something edged it's way from the tree and out from behind the tree appeared a pale boy who just about blended in with the snow. His smile was sudden as if he were to say sorry and leave, but that was not the case.
"That's a nice house you have there," the strange boy said with a smile, "perhaps I could warm up a little before returning back home?" The boy had come closer to the window now, and he wasn't a boy after all, he looked more in his late teens but with a face that said otherwise.
"You do know you're trespassing, right?"
"Please sir?" he said while the snow and wind blew his hair around.
"Fine I guess, but just for a little while, OK?" I then walked to open the door when it opened from the other side.
"Wow it's really cold out there, thanks"
He closed the door behind him as he walked to the fireplace and sat on my loveseat.
"Do you need anything, a towel or maybe hot chocolate?"
"Hot chocolate would be amazing if you would."
"Uh yeah, sure thing." He turned to the kitchen and grabbed a cup and filled it with water and within seconds it was steaming hot, He tore open a packet and poured it in the cup and watched as it dissolved. He turned to the window and saw snow, but not the forest, just snow.
Returning to the living room I saw that the other windows were full of snow too, maybe it's just sticking to them he thought. He looked to see if his guest was looking and heated the window, nothing budged. Shit.
Smiling and turning around he walked over to his guest and handed him the cup of Hot chocolate.
"Thanks"
"You're welcome," He sighed, "well it seems like we're snowed in and I have no clue when it will clear out again so I guess you can stay the night unless you know how to get out of a snow-in."
For some reason unknown, his random guest smiled for a second but quickly went to take a sip of his chocolate.
"Ahh, too hot!" He coughed as he choked down the hot liquid.
"It's called 'Hot chocolate' for a reason," He said not noticing how hot he must of made it by accident.
"Yeah, It's OK," And blew off the steam off the top like it was never hot in the first place. He almost saw a ice layer form on the top. Taking a gulp of the liquid he then turned and asked, "So when did you find out you could control fire?"
