Another bleak day, slowly passing by. The rain dripping off roof tiles and pouring out of gutter drains. The cold breath of the wind chilling these crowded streets with its swift gusts. The bus window fogging up as I stare out, everything a blur of passing faces and neon lights shining through the mist.
The bus comes to an abrupt stop to my surprise, my gaze breaking from the window. The door of the vehicle creaks open as a stream of passengers enter and exit. As the hunt for seats begin I scoot closer to the window to avoid confrontation. Some people coming in groups searching for multiple seats slide by. Then, my tired, hazy mocha eyes connect with a pair of glistening, clear blue eyes. Our stare never faltering as she approached."Is this seat taken?" The girl asks.
"Um, yes, it is.... By you I mean." Dammit, well that was smooth. As bad as my flirting attempt was, she seemed to have cracked out a small smile. I glance over as she gracefully slides into her seat. I turn my attention back towards the window, trying to hide the blush that sprung up on my cheeks. We sat for a minute or two till she broke the silence.
"My name's Megan." she spoke out, a sense of sunshine in her voice that this dreary day would normally suck out of anyone.
"Mines Chris." I reply. That sparked a conversation between the two of us, her beginning on about how dark and stormy these past weeks have been. Her beautiful enthusiasm shining through with every word she spoke, the happiness in her eyes, the rosy, tan, color of her skin, the way she'd use her hands when she talked to emphasize things. I had cared so much about what she wanted to say that I didn't realize I hadn't said much myself. My words came out with more excitement than I had felt in my soul all day, this girl had the power to change my mood as quickly as the rain fell outside the icy windows of our ride to our destinations. As I spoke I saw the interest in her eyes, the way her pupils would dilate when they fell upon my face. The conversation between us went on for what seemed like hours till the bus's brakes tightened and slowed us to a stop. We both sighed out our unhappy sighs that this had to end in unison.
As we both clamored off of the warm bus into the freezing wind and rain of these winter months, we both smiled and wished the other a good day and parted ways. I felt a sense of sadness drift over, I didn't want her to leave, I had felt the best I had in a long time when we spoke.I retired back to my cozy apartment, I shrink into my soft bed, watching the day comes to an end. Tomorrow's sun rose quickly that morning, my restlessness growing as I climb into my clothes to get ready for my long, boring day at the coffee shop, my uniform with its faint smell of coffee beans, getting me prepared. I grab my rusty old umbrella and lock the small paint chipped door, then stroll into the sprinkling rain. The small walk from my humble home to the dimly lit bus stop is monotonous.
Brushing dead leaves and water off the cold bench to take a seat, waiting for my steel transportation to arrive. Then i hear it, a small giggle come from my left. My head swooping over to see Megan, smiling as she quickly takes the spot next to me. Our conversations last long as the days go by, continuously repeating the same cycle.
Till that one day. We were riding on the bus, today more silent than anytime in the past. The snow fluttering downwards out of the sky. I feel a warm grip slowly wrap around my hand, my eyes shift downwards to look then back up over to hers, a grin written on her face, this giving me the courage to do something I've wanted to do for a long time.
"Hey Megan?" I began, "Are you free this Friday?" The smile slowly disappearing into a thinking look, brows furrowed. A feeling of dread rising in my stomach, what if she doesn't say yes, I think.
"Hmm..." I hear her quiet hum to which I look over. " Ya know? I think I just happen to be free this Friday, I'd be happy to go out with you!" She beams, blurting out her answer.
"Great!" I shout back. Our rides together continued till they came to a end. Yes, I know what your thinking.... we bought a car when we bought our apartment! My days have felt more exciting and bright with her around. It's been a year since we first met and things can't be better. Today we were cuddled up on the couch, watching the snow when she whispered out.
"Chris?"
"Yeah Meg?" I say turning my head down.
She sharply inhaled "We've been dating for a year now, I've only ever heard you referred to as Chris, is it short for something?" I chuckle out softly
"Yeah it is short for something, Christine." A small smile rises across her face.
"Christine? I like it."
Heyo! Got my surprise gay love story for the day! This is my first attempt at writing anything cutesy, I'm pretty proud of it to be honest. This story reminds me of my girlfriend and I , especially the parts where Chris is describing Megan. I'm just one of those people who find depressing things in everything, then she comes along and changes my whole world. I love her so much. I thank y'all for reading if ya do. It really would mean a lot to me.
