The Nefferin
Prologue
The Dream
--
I wasn't exactly sure where I was, all I knew was that everything was very dark and all I could see was the moon high in the sky shining intensely. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness I could see that I was standing at the edge of a pond that held the moon in a perfect reflection. The water was dark but had a very unnatural appearance to it.
As I stood staring at the pond, the water suddenly began to rise in the middle as though something was coming up from underneath it. After a few moments the rising water should have fallen back into place to reveal whatever it was that was coming through it but didn't. It rose like a giant arrow being shot through it, and almost as quickly as it began to rise the water had stopped and just remained frozen in midair. My eyes must be playing tricks on me because it wasn't possible for water to just remain so still and hold itself up like it was.
I blinked my eyes and the water was back in the pond without even a ripple like nothing had happened, but in its place was a person standing as though they were floating on the water. Even though it was dark I could see them as clear as day. Their hair was black, straight and down just past their shoulders but the way it was flowing in the breeze made it hard to determine the exact length. I couldn't determine whether or not this person was male or female because they had their back turned towards me. They wore black clothes that looked like a regular person's clothes but somewhat mysterious and more elegant. As they shifted a bit, the side of their face became visible to me. Although I was only seeing the side of their face the mere beauty of it was unmistakable. Their skin seemed flawless and as the moonlight shined I couldn't help but see a pale violet glow coming off the skin.
Standing there staring and analyzing them they had finally realized I was there. Soon enough they were walking over to me, moving over the water as though it wasn't even there. As they approached me I instantly took notice to the beauty in their eyes. The turquoise in them was very dark and had captured my full attention. I hadn't even noticed how close they actually were to me until it felt as though the ground beneath me was disappearing. Their eyes widened and screamed out to me in pain, I could feel myself begin to fall and could see the pain in their eyes as I did so. It looked as though they were reaching out to save me and pull me up but they had not been quick enough. I wanted them to pull me to safety and even though I had raised my arms as well it was too late. I was falling, engulfed in darkness even the light of the moon had faded out completely now. Closing my eyes all I could see were those dark turquoise ones looking directly at me so full of hurt in that last moment it seemed like I had betrayed them whoever they were.
Opening my eyes I could see the rays of the streetlight outside coming through the window illuminating my bedroom. I don't understand why this dream keeps reoccurring but ever since I turned twenty a few days ago it's the only thing I have been dreaming about. I know it's just a dream but it always feels like I'm really there standing next to the moonlit pond. This time they almost reached me, whoever they are. What is happening to me? I can't figure out what this dream means and even though the pond is beautiful those eyes keep haunting me wherever I go.
