Chapter One: Misjudged?

I walked through the locker lined halls. Vibrant blue standing out as I passed each numbered door. Every now and again a light would flicker above me causing me to stagger my walk. I've always hated this school. Students casually look at me. Most with disgust but some with curiosity. I've never been the popular one, you could say I'm more of the quiet girl who sits in the back of class and listens only to keep her grades up. Yep, that's me.

I continued down the hall. The cream walls seemed to be closing in as I continued to get closer to his office. What was I thinking? Did I know what to say when he asked about...the incident?

I pushed open the biggest blue door at the north end of the main hall. "You wanted to see me Principal Drew?" He had to be at least forty based on his growing bald spot on the top of his head and bulging belly. The office was decorated with pictures of students and trophy lined cabinets from events that school teams must've won. It was painted cream, similar to the rest of the school however the room was thinly carpeted to give it a more 'luxurious' feel.

"Ah yes, take a seat Miss Hewitt" he gestured to the plastic sky blue chair across from his large desk. You would think that a guy with as much money as he, would be able to get a more comfortable chair?

"So why did you ask me to come today sir?" I knew why, I guess I just want to hear him say it. I'm missing out on my break time for this stupid unwanted conversation.

He leaned back in his leather armchair while stroking his stubbled chin tenderly. "I think you know that dear so can we skip to the point?" I nodded. This didn't need to be longer than it had to be. "Miss Hewitt... Your expelled for the rest of the week." He said nearly calmly. Brows still furrowed.

"B-but that's four whole days sir? Y-You wouldn't want me to miss school when e-exams are in a few weeks time would you?" Don't stutter Maya! It makes you seem incapable of taking this. You knew you were going to be punished.

"Hardly miss Hewitt" he paused "I know your a smart kid Maya and I never thought I would have to expel you...ever!" I could tell he was slightly regretting his harsh punishment but what he said is final. "You can catch up! Your grades are higher than most of the year tens, That's a year above you. You should feel honoured to have such a long break."

"Don't turn this on me Principal Drew, it's not even my fault that your expelling me!" Which is half true.

He considered my statement "I'm sure Annie didn't deserve to have her arm broken." Oh but she did! That popular bitch has bullied me ever since I transferred to this damned school four years ago! She touched a nerve today, bringing up my family in front of the whole year nine student body and deserved what has happened to her 100%.

After a few minutes of silence I nodded to show that I accept my punishment. "You may leave now Maya..." I stood and headed towards the door. "Oh, and tell your mother that I give her my condolences" this whole Annie thing made me nearly forget about my father. He passed away only a week ago to lung cancer. I tried many times to talk him out of smoking but he never listened, he always knew the consequences of his actions would be serious and in his case, life taking. I nodded again and headed towards my locker to grab my books and head home.

-----------------------

"Your home early Maya? Are you sick?" My inconsiderate mother asked the minute I stepped through our front door. Her head poking out from around the corner of the kitchen to look at me. Her brown hair was shining in the sunlight from a nearby window and her eyes were piercing into my very soul. I sighed heavily without replying and walked upstairs to my room.

My room was my sanctuary. The bright blue walls had been mostly covered in posters of various bands and celebrities, my bookshelf was over stuffed with all the books that took me under the average amount of time to read, my bed had my favourite spread which showed a bunch of inspirational words with a sky blue background (like a beach but not I guess) and my desk with my MacBook sat in the corner beside my built in wardrobe. I walked in and put my bag on my large bed before I shut the door and huffed as I turned and slid down down to the floor, sitting against the door for a few minutes. A lot can happen in four days at Wayside High. Just thinking about the amount of homework I would receive next Monday and all the misunderstood glares I would receive in the halls on my way to class was enough to make me shiver.
