Chapter four
Lilac
"Why her?" Matthew whines, looking over at me and then back at our teacher as if it's obvious that I'm an alien or something.
"Because I said so Matthew. Now stop acting like a seventh grader, and suck it up" She says firmly. She calls out the rest of the classes name's, putting them all into partners as well. Jerrick gets paired with Jannett, a nice girl that everyone likes. Mrs. Shias, our teacher instructs us to go outside and capture nature. When we all get our cameras, Matthew goes with his friends outside. I walk away from the loud group of boys, and towards the forest that lines the edge of our school. I capture a few pictures of the sunlight, shining through the branches of a willow tree. I make sure to get a picture of some moisture rolling down a leaf. After forty five minutes of class, we're called back into the school. When we are all seated again, Mrs. Shias asks us how things went
"Lilac didn't work with me at all, she went off on her own" Matthew says, playing innocent. My mouth drops open and I look over at him.
"Are you serious?" All you did was sit with your friends!" I say in disbelief.
"And they're partners. You're the only one that ditched your partner" He says.
"I cannot believe you!" I say, clenching my jaw.
"Lilac is it true that you went off by yourself?" Shias asks.
"Yes" I say, looking at the wall to my left.
"You need to work with your partner. I won't hear anything else." She says.
"He was with his friends!" I say in frustration.
"Out!" Mrs. Shias yells, pointing to the door. I get up, slamming my chair back under my desk. I slam the door behind me, and walk outside again.
"Fuck!" I scream, kicking a large rock. It rolls quickly across the parking lot. My big toe throbs, but I ignore it. I walk towards the back feild again. I lay down on the grass and violently rip the blades out of the ground.
I sit up and take my shoe off. When I do, I see that my sock is soaked with blood. I groan and pull it off. My toe has a large cut that runs just under the nail. It's already starting to turn black. I slip my sock back on, and curse multiple times as I force my shoe back on. I stand up and limp back towards the school as the bell rings, dismissing everyone from their class. When I reach my locker, I pull it open forcefully. I grab my gym bag and wince, thinking about running with my split toe. When I get to my class, I show my gym teacher, Mr. Yumier my toe. He wraps it in gauze, and medical tape.
"You can be excused. I won't make you run with your toe like that" He says.
"Thank you" I say gratefully. I hobble to the bleachers. I throw my bag up, then pull myself up to the top. I spend the next hour watching my class play volleyball. When the bell rings, I almost scream in delight at the fact that I have a double spare, but then I remember that my dad is home. I limp down to the library, and sit on a couch that faces another couch against the wall. I put my foot up and shut my eyes.
"Hey" I open my eyes and see Luke.
"Hey" I say forcing a smile.
"What happened to your foot?"
"Oh uh I kicked a rock.." I say, looking at my wrapped foot.
"Genius" Luke says, sitting at the end of the couch.
"I got paired with Matthew in photography." I say, shaking my head.
"Oh my god that sucks Lilac" Luke says. I nod.
"That guy.. Jerrick, my neighbor seemed.. concerned. It was really weird" I say, shaking my head.
"Well he did push you out of the way that night" He says.
"Anyone would have" I say shrugging.
"I don't know." He says. I shake my head.
Luke and I spend the next two hours reading and studying. When the bell rings I get on the bus and go home. Once inside I go into my room, and lay down, barely able to keep my eyes open. I sigh and shut my eyes, relaxing. Before I know it I've slipped into a nice sleep. Because I fell asleep so early, I wake up at one in the morning. I sit up, and look out my window. Jerrick has his light on, and I can see him sitting down. He has his head in his hands. He looks up and sees me. He quickly stands and shuts his blinds. I shrug it off, and take a sleep aid to fall back to sleep. Before I know it, my alarm clock is screaming at me, and I'm up to repeat my cycle.
