Preface
Before
Mothers always know how to make their kids feel better, however, as she stared down at the wailing baby she had no idea what to do. She should be able to comfort him in his time of need, instead, she stared at him as though he was a stranger. In reality, he wasn’t. There was no way the baby could be a stranger. Though they had a little over eighteen years of an age gap between them, the similarities were uncanny. Mahogany brown waves on top of their heads, perfect Cupid’s bow lips, defined cheekbones, and large violet eyes that revealed their every thought and feeling. Lani stared down at her brother, the only person she had left, and she felt nothing but hatred. He had killed her. If it weren’t for him, she’d still be here, she’d still be able to comfort Lani, she’d be able to help. If it weren’t for the stupid little boy, that lay on the bed screaming his heart out, Lani’s mother, and best friend, would still be alive.
In the beginning, she had been so happy for her mother, who had always wanted another child. She had been happy to have a sibling, even though they had a giant gap between their ages. As her mother grew larger, Lani felt true joy for the first time in a long time.
She had helped her mother set up the nursery, and pick out baby names. She had done everything for her mother, not letting her lift a finger, and in the end it was all for nothing.
Lani made the bottle with jerky, angry movements, not bothering to warm it as she had been told before she put the nipple in the baby’s mouth.
His tiny lips wrapped around the top, and suckled. Lani was briefly lost in her thoughts, thoughts that involved hurting her helpless brother. Thoughts that disgusted her. She felt something in her chest stir, the emptiness moving, deepening, before a familiar emotion erupted. Love.
She pulled him closer, gently rocking him back and forth in a soothing manner, scared of harming him. He had downed the two ounces that had been in the bottle, so Lani made him two more and this time, she stuck it in the microwave for five seconds and even tested it against the inside of her wrist.
He made a sound of delight as he began to suckle once more, and Lani’s insides melted. Her glare softened into a loving gaze, and her stone like stature relaxed. She realized that she couldn’t hate her brother for what had happened, because it wasn’t his fault. He couldn’t be held responsible. Lani walked into her room, and laid James on the bed next to her so she could be next to him.
