“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” – Thornton Wilder
PREFACE
The girl that stared at me looked so miserable that I wanted to kill her just to put her out of her misery, and that I would do…soon. Her kohl straight black hair looked messy in that makeshift bun with stray pieces of hair framing her heart shape face. She had bags under her dull forest green eyes that could tell anyone who saw that she hadn’t slept for days. That girl was my reflection.
“Okay… this is what I want. Just- just one second of pain and then I will be with them.” I whispered to myself as I lifted up the gun to my temple with trembling fingers. “I am so sorry Mom.” I mumbled with my eyes closed, “so sorry.”
“What the heck are you doing!?” A voice yelled from behind me.
“Wha-?”
PROLOGUE
-THREE MONTHS AGO-
“Hi there beautiful!” I heard a voice say from behind me as two hands brushed past my neck to cover my eyes.
I inhaled my boyfriend’s musky scent with a small smile on my lips, “Hey”.
He chuckled before removing his hands from my eyes to grasp one of my hands in his.
“So how were your classes today?” He asked, raising one of his arched eyebrows.
“Same as always, boring, but on the bright side I have no homework tonight so maybe we could do something?” I wondered eagerly.
“Ya sure, oh but I have a doctor’s appointment to go to today too.” He said wrinkling his nose.
“Oh.” Wait, did he say ‘doctor’s appointment?’ I stopped walking and turned to face him, “Wait! A doctor’s appointment? Are you okay? Is anything wrong? Are you sick? Tired? Do you want to sit down? Did you drink water today?”
He lightly chuckled before messing up my hair and dragging me off to the bus stop.
“Wait! You didn’t answer my question? We could go to the nurse if you aren’t feeling good; she stays here after school you know! Or maybe I could call Mom to drive us home instead of taking the bus? Or your dad could come, wait, what’s wrong? Does anything hurt? Did you catch a cold? I told you we shouldn’t go swimming at midnight!” I bombarded him with questions.
He just smirked at me as he caressed my cheek, “I am perfectly fine, it’s a regular checkup, calm down Sammy. Actually don’t calm down, you look cute when you are all worried.” He mumbled so that only I could hear him. And of course, I blushed. I don’t know why but anytime Mason complimented me, my cheeks reddened. Oh god I was so madly in love with that boy.
Yes, I did say love. True, we were both only high school freshmen, but we had been dating since seventh grade and I just knew that we would be together forever. He would be my first and last boyfriend.
“Sammy? Samantha?” I noticed a hand being waved in front of my face and looked up to see an amused Mason.
“In dreamland again are we? Dreaming about how lucky you are to be with moi?” He smirked putting his hand on his chest dramatically.
I just smacked his shoulder and rolled my eyes, “You wish.”
“Yes I do. Well, our transportation awaits you, my lady. So with your permission, may I escort you to our humble carriage?” Mason asked in a fake British accent.
I giggled, “Mason your accent is horrible! It hurts my ears!” I said as I pulled him with me to our humble carriage- the public bus.
“But you still love me.” He whispered in my ear once we were seated.
“Though I don’t know why…” I whispered back.
“Gasp!” He said, (yes he actually said the word ‘gasp’ instead of actually gasping) as he dramatically but his hand to his heart, “Well I am hurt!”
“Oh you are so melodramatic!” I whispered back as I turned to face the window. I always sat on the seat with the window while Mason sat beside me; it was just how we rolled.
“Hey, hey now, don’t insult my acting skills! I took three years of drama you know! I KNOW how to act, unlike some people who had to run away in the middle of her monologue because she forgot her lines.”
“I didn’t forget my lines! I just… um, had to go somewhere.”
“Ya sure, whatever floats your boat.”
“You know what? You are irritating. I am not talking to you!” I said before I dramatically turned around to face the window again, slapping his face with my hair in the process.
“Sammmmmmy” Mason said poking my arm.
“Sam-Sam!” I continued ignoring him.
“Okay, okay, gosh, I am sorry, you are the world’s best actress and you didn’t run away during that play, you just had somewhere to go. Now am I forgiven?”
“Of course I forgive you! You just admitted that I am the world’s best actress, now I can’t ‘not’ forgive you now can I?” I said smiling at him.
He smiled back at me before leaning in to kiss my cheek. “Nope. I am just too cute so you can’t ever be mad at me for long.”
“Ya, ya, don’t flatter yourself too much cutie.” I said with a roll of my eyes.
“You just called me cutie!” He said smiling ear to ear.
“I can take it back you know.” I warned him.
“But you won’t.”
“Oh don’t be so sure ‘bout that Mister.”
“Well, I think I am cute – but I think you are even cuter than me, now that’s a big compliment.”
I blushed and looked down at my hands on my lap like I had earlier; this was the second time he called me cute this afternoon… but then again he always compliments me in some way at least a gazillion times a day.
From the corner of my eye I caught him staring at me.
“What?” I half growled and half groaned.
He chuckled, “Um nothing…”
I raised my eyebrows at him and he swallowed before looking down at his lap nervously, “I just love your blush. Damn girl you are beautiful. I am so lucky to have you.” He mumbled and I could feel my cheeks heating up again. He was so sweet sometimes, and at times like this, I could honestly say that I was the luckiest girl on this planet… well except for the having an alcoholic for a father part.
