IN A TOWN FAR EAST OFF AVONLEA

September 21st, 1876

"You alright, miss?", Gilbert Blythe ambled towards the direction of the counter, where Riley Carter stood attempting to calm the younger child.

The yelling continued to linger throughout the store as Gilbert's voice was barely heard by the girl.

"What?" Riley's voice blared across towards the boy that stood approximately 4 metres in front of her, trying to drain the screams out to hear what the boy was saying.

"I said, are you alright?" Gilbert raised his voice, slightly hovering over to allow his voice to project more clearly.

"I'm doing splendidly, thank you for asking," She responded sarcastically, still trying to tame her sister whilst maintaining eye contact with the boy that stood in front of her as he raised one eyebrow with a knowing look as a small laugh escaped his mouth. Riley Carter couldn't help but feel as though his laugh was contagious, almost as though she couldn't help but beam along with him. So she did. The Blythe boy made his way to the youngest sibling, kneeling on the floor next to her to meet her height.

"Hey, what's going on?" He smiled at the child as her screeching momentarily came to a stop as her gaze was met with an unfamiliar face. Emma Carter scurried behind her older sister's legs, gripping her dress tightly as Gilbert began getting up.

"Nothing's going on, she's just being extremely unreasonable." Riley pulled her sister off of her, Emma having an irritated and somewhat offended expression on her face, as though she knew what the word unreasonable meant at such an age.

"She won't buy me this, she's being mean." The child pouted up at Gilbert, who had a very amused look on his face, shifting gazes between both girls.

"That's a lie Emma, I'm not trying to be, I just have no money left to buy you that." Riley promptly defended herself, responding with an all too undefined tone as she directed her sister towards the exit of the store.
