The Announcement

Hi Guys I've been on Wattpad for a little while now and finally decided to try my hand at a story. So check it out and give it a fair shake. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Karen got up at the crack of dawn, like she did every day. No one was up in her high-end subdivision and it was the time she could be one with nature. Pushing her heavy green duvet covers off of her she landed her feet right into her Hello Kitty slippers, a gift from her niece Kai. Walking over to her dresser she pulled out sweat pants, a t-shirt and a sports bra. Going into her bathroom she washed and moisturized her face, brushed her teeth and slipped her work-out gear on. Grabbing a pair of black socks she put them on her feet and threw her long raven hair into a messy bun. Running down her granite spiral stair case that led to her large foyer, she put her shoes on and grabbed her house keys.

“Pit…pat..pit…pat..” She heard the raindrops slowly fall as she took off from her porch. Not bothering to stretch she ran around her neighborhood. Hearing her feet hit the gravel in the upscale development gave her a burst of energy. It always did, especially when she took in the scenery.

The lush lawns of her neighbors, the expensive luxury cars, and the beautiful landscape pushed her even further in her morning work-out. She had made it from a broken home to a home that many people dreamed about. She had a pool, a theater room, a game room, seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms. Not to mention a luxury kitchen where she often created culinary masterpieces for her guest. She had a god-father like study and a circular drive way, lined with a Range Rover, a Mercedes Benz and her all-time favorite a Bentley. She had art and sculptures that would make any museum jealous. And she did it all by herself, much to the chagrin and distaste of her friends. They were all married before they moved into houses the size of hers, but not Karen. She didn’t believe that a woman needed to wait on a man when she could do for herself.

Jogging back into her drive way she stopped to take in the glory of her hard-work and dedication. She felt a sense of pride and accomplishment that would never get old. In fact she had lived there for two years and every morning she gained a new appreciation for the sight before her. This propelled her to continue on her road to success despite the odds.

She was a vulture, a piranha even in the legal and business worlds. She didn’t become a millionaire by being nice and she wouldn’t remain one if she were. She wanted the corner office before thirty and she got it. Barely out of NYU School of Law she had sealed a position at a prestigious law firm and quickly made it through the ranks to Partner.

Walking back in her house, she went into the kitchen to make egg whites, toast, a strip of bacon and  a Kale and Banana smoothie. After blending her smoothie she turned on Fox Business news to see what was going on. Looking at her clock she realized that it was 5:54AM. She had to be out of the house by 7:15 in order to make it into the city by 8:20AM leaving her time to get her barrings before morning meetings. Completing her meal she scarfed it down, barely tasting it. She was shocked by what she saw.

“Today on Fox Business News, Karen Macomb the General Counsel for the Simmons Group has just been named the lead on the Forest acquisition in Upstate New York. This decision comes on the heels of her successful buyout of Trump International. If successful in this endeavor Ms. Macomb stands to profit over 2.5 billion dollars for the Simmons Group and over one hundred million dollars for herself.” Dumb founded Karen turned the tv off and reeled in the notion of what the news anchor had just said.

Almost immediately her phone went off with emails and text messages. She let that fade to the background while she ran upstairs to take a shower and throw on one of her customary suits. She had a beautiful shape, but no one would ever know it. She hid behind suits that weren’t flattering and bifocal glasses. Her teeth were straight and white and her eyes were naturally blue. She hid them with brown contacts. No one would ever say her success came because she was beautiful. She worked her ass off and refused to be some man’s trophy or charity case. Every bone she got wasn’t thrown to her out of human lust-oh no it was because she was smart, quick witted and the men she worked with saw her as a very unattractive woman. She never wore heels; she never wore make-up, not in the traditional sense anyway. Her natural tanned skin, was hidden with ashen white make-up to make her appear a sickening pasty color.

No, she was there off of merit and hard work not beauty. Most people from her old town wouldn’t recognize her. That’s the way she wanted it. Leaving for work and arming her alarm system Karen got into her black exterior peanut butter interior car and drove the fifty minutes into New York and prepared herself to be greeted by the press and paparazzi. This was going to be a great day she could feel it in her bones.

Not once did she think that the announcement that was made that morning on multiple media platforms would cause her “business as usual” day to be transformed into something totally different and unexpected. For across the State Borders was an angry Alpha who would kill before he let anyone take his packs land.
