"And then you make a circle with this one and a circle with this one and then you tie it." I explained, showing Lexi how to tie her shoes.

The blank look she was giving me told me she was lost.

"Okay. Grab ya bag and let's go."

She jumped up and ran to her room to get her backpack. I grabbed my own bag and the house key.

After a quick prayer, we were out the door.

Lately, I've been neglecting to speak Spanish around Lexi. I want her to grow up like I did - learning Spanish.

"¿Estás listo para la escuela, Lexi?" Are you ready for school, Lexi?

"Sí." Yes.

"Bueno. Are you going to be good today?"

"Sí."

"Okay, cause I don't want any notes from your teacher, Alexis."

"But - " she protested.

"I don't want anymore notes from your teacher." I repeated.

"Okay," she pouted.

The bus rumbled down the street and pulled to a stop in front of us.

"Espera." Wait. I said, pulling a piece of folded paper out of my backpack.

Lexi turned around and I showed her the paper.

"Your lunch money." I unzipped her backpack and dropped it inside. "Give it to your teacher when you get to school."

"Okay. Bye, Jazlyn!"

"Bye, Lex." I kissed her cheek and she got on the bus.

A look at my phone time told me that I had twenty minutes until Kayla and Talia came to pick me up.

I left the bus stop to head back home and was stopped by a hand on my arm.

"Where you headin'?" said a male voice.

Fuck.

"Home." I pulled my arm away.

My arm was quickly yanked back and I was face-to-face with John.

"Don't walk away when I'm talkin' to you." John said, with a strong grip on my arm.

"What do you want?" I snapped, trying to pull away from John. I'm so sick of this aggressive shit.

"Stop with the fucking additude." He snapped back, hitting me in the head.

"Don't fucking touching me." I spat back.

I suddenly found myself struggling to breathe as John's hand tightened around my throat.

"I don't know what the fuck you thought you grew since I was gone, but you better cut them shits off because I promise it'll get you killed, on boss."

Pause.

You would think us arguing in public at seven-thirty in the morning would draw attention, and it did, but apparently people had more important things to worry about. A few people were walking around us or crossing the street to avoid us - some were even watching us from their houses.
