June 13 1999
Lolita walked in the restaurant and saw her date, Donovan LeAnto Clark. She felt herself start blushing and grinning.
"Hey Donovan, I'm Lolita Kinnings." She said and they embraced. She sat across from him and just looked at him.
"Well Lolita, you can call me Don." He was a dark skin male, waves, a foot taller than Lo. He was wearing a button up shirt and slacks, almost like he was on a job interview instead of a date.
"You can call me Lo." She said and moved her straightened brown hair. They looked at each other for a while as they talked. She had goosebumps every time he would talk, he was just that cool. She went on the date to distract herself from the fact that her ex-boyfriend was getting married to the woman he constantly cheated on her with and on top of everything else he was her best friend so she felt that she had to move on for him.
"So Lo, what do you do?"
"I work at a restaurant as a server and I do hair on the side." She said and he nodded.
"What do you do, Don."
"I work at an insurance firm."
"What kind of insurance?" She asked, engaged in the conversation.
"Life insurance."
"Why have life insurance?"
"You never know when someone or something will take your life so it just leaves your family with a little something to keep them afloat, depending on what kind you get."
"Lovely." She said and she looked down but could feel him staring at her still. She had her curly hair down and was wearing a brown lipstick and a nude dress with pumps to match.
"Lo, can I ask how your last relationship ended?"
"He wanted to be with his baby momma, that's it." Truthfully it was never just it, Marshall and Lolita had too much history for it to just be "it".
"Do you still talk to him?" Don asked and Lolita nodded.
"Yeah, just cause we broke up doesn't mean that I hate him. Why did you and your ex break up?"
"She was trying to play me, she'd lie about where she was going, she cheated, we fought a lot."
"Do y'all talk still?"
"She's been missing for like six months, nobody knows where she went." He said and Lolita could see tears forming in his eyes.
"I'm sorry to hear that." Lo said and placed her hand on top of his.
Present
Lolita sat on the table at the Doctors Office and placed her hand in Marshall's. Lolita kept the pregnancy a secret while he was gone and from everybody because she didn't want to lose the baby or make it seem like she was trying to trap Marshall. So while this was her first doctors appointment, it wasn't like she didn't have a basic idea of how far along she was.
"Good morning Ms. Kinnings, how are you this glorious day?" Dr. Lee asked as she came in.
"I'm good, never better."
"Good, alright let's see what this baby looks like right now." Dr. Lee said and prepped Lo for the ultrasound.
"Alright, this is baby, looks about 3 1/2 months or 16 weeks and 3 days along. Let's see if we can find out the gender." Dr. Lee looked around and smiled.
"You are having a beautiful baby girl, bringing in another princess to the world." She said and Lo smiled.
Two Hours Later
Marshall and Lo walked into the house and heard music playing and the girls yelling, which didn't make sense to them since Kim would've been at her house, the girls would've been at school, and the house should've been empty. They looked at each other and walked towards their room and they checked separate parts of the room. They heard the kids still but they also heard water rushing from somewhere.
"I'm gonna check the bathroom." She said and as she walked towards the room. She felt the carpet smush under her feet. She opened the door and found Kim laying under the water with the faucet running and the water was everywhere. Lolita ran up to the slipping a few times and turned the water off. She lifted Kim up out of the water and wrapped her in a towel. Kim's eyes were looking around and tears were rolling down her face.
"I'm so sorry." She choked out and cried onto Lolita's stomach. Marshall came in and sat with her.
"Kim, why?" He asked wiping her tears with his shirt,"why always in the house where our kids sleep, why?"
"I don't know." She cried out and pushed her face into Lolita's shirt. Lolita patted her back and looked at her.
"Kim, you gotta calm down. It's not good for the baby." Lo said. She looked at Marshall and he took the cue to leave. Lolita stood up and then helped Kim up as well. She helped her walk to the bed and laid her down. She tucked her underneath the covers and then sighed. Kim laid flat on the bed and her face was wetter than rain puddles. Her hair dripping and her face was long with distain for the whole ordeal.
"Kim."
"What?" She said and wiped her eyes, trying to keep whatever bit of dignity she had left.
"Kim, we need to get along. This dude clearly can't pick who he wants. I don't know how long I'll be doing this, but our kids are gonna be siblings. We need to work together. I don't want you to die. I don't want you on drugs, I don't want you in danger, Kim. I don't hate you girl, you were my best friend in high school for the longest. I'm so sorry for everything, but we gotta make it work with the time we have." Lolita said and she felt her start to tear up. Kim sat up and they hugged for the first time since high school.
Just like with Don, Lolita and Kim had a lot of unspoken history, history Marshall didn't even know about. It seemed like everyday that Lo was reunited with Marshall, a memory would return from the years before.
Lolita left the room and looked at Marshall sitting on the couch sorting pictures to put in the albums.
"Hey." She said.
June 1, 1989
Lolita walked down the street and threw her hair up in a ponytail.
"Hey Kim!" Lo said and the girls embraced.
"Hey girl!" She said and they locked arms.
"How's your man?" Lolita asked and Kim grinned.
"We're good, we finagled his mom into letting me stay with them."
"You should let me come over one day." She said and Kim chuckled.
"I will, come over today. Now." She said.
"Kim, I've never met the boy."
"What do you mean you've never met Marshall?"
"There's like three in the building." She said and laughed. Lolita had been messing around with a dude named Marshall, but she hoped it wasn't the same one. As they walked down the street, everything was familiar. As they got to the house, she felt herself getting red.
"You okay, Lo?" Kim asked as they walked into the house.
"Yeah." She said and they walked into the living room.
"Hey." Marshall said only seeing Kim at first. Lolita's heart sank as they spotted each other. He was playing her and she knew it and now they knew it. Kim didn't know it.
"So Marshall, this is Lolita. Lo, this is Marshall my boyfriend."
"Hey Marshall." She said and started sweating. Kim sat down with Marshall placing a kiss on his cheek. Lo sat down adjacent to them and felt this salty watery feeling come up to her mouth.
"Kim I'll be back." She said and rushed out the front door. She felt herself gag and then throw up. She sat on the porch trying to recover when she heard the door open. She looked up and Marshall was there. She felt the feelings start to come up, and he started to move his hand towards her.
"Don't fucking touch me." She said, standing up and pushing him away.
"Loli-"
"You tried to fuckin play me, Marshall." She said and pushed him.
"Lo, please."
"I'm leaving, she's my best friend. You knew that, I didn't know she was talking about you all this time. I hate you." She said.
"I love you, Lolita please."
"No." She said and walked away.
Present
"Hey Lo." Marshall said as she walked in. He kissed her and she cuddled under him. They looked at the pictures together and sighed.
"We have to do better by her." She said.
"Hailie, yeah we d-"
"I'm not talking about Hailie, Marshall. We're talking about Kim. We did wrong by her the whole time."
"What about what she did to me?"
"You cheated first, she just kept it going."
"I cheated with you."
"And on me...several times. If it wasn't for this baby, we wouldn't be talking right now. This baby is our blessing and we need to be nice to her. She always gone through a lot."
"Lolita, I'm not arguing with you about this. She's done this, this drugs and drinking shit to herself. All the shit the kids have seen." He said and Lo sighed.
"She's gonna keep trying to kill herself, one of these days it's going to work." Lolita said and pushed his arm up from off her before walking down to the basement.
