They went down the elevator then into a room where there were old computers everywhere.
"This can't be the data-point, this technology is ancient," Natasha stated.
Then she saw a small flash drive port. She put the flash drive in it, making the ancient computers come to life.
"Initiate system?" the computer asked.
Natasha typed on the keyboard while saying, "Y-E-S, spells yes."
Natasha smiled as the old computer started up.
"Shall we play a game?" she smirked then told them, "It's from a movie that--"
"Yeah, I saw it," Steve told her.
"I didn't," Y/N chimed in.
Then an accented voice interrupted their conversation.
"Rogers, Steven. Born, 1918. Rogers, Y/N. Born, 1920. Romanoff, Natalia Alianovna. Born, 1984," the voice said.
An old camera caught their attention as it scanned them.
"It's some kind of a recording," Natasha said.
"I am not a recording, Fräulein. I may not be the man I was when the Captain and Lady Rogers took me prisoner in 1945, but I am," the voice remarked.
The computer screen showed an old photo of Dr. Arnim Zola.
"Do you guys know this thing?" Natasha asked them.
"Arnim Zola was a German scientist who worked for the Red Skull," Steve explained.
"He's been dead for years," Y/N added.
"First correction, I am Swiss," Zola corrected then continued, "Second, look around you. I have never been more alive. In 1972, I received a terminal diagnosis. Science could not save my body. My mind, however, that was worth saving on two hundred thousand feet of data banks. You are standing in my brain."
"How did you get here?" Steve asked.
"Invited," Zola answered.
"It was Operation Paperclip after World War II. SHIELD recruited German scientists with strategic value," Natasha said.
"They thought I could help their cause. I also helped my own," Zola replied.
"HYDRA died with the Red Skull," Steve pointed out.
"Cut off one head, two more shall take its place," Zola responded.
"Prove it," Y/N challenged.
"Accessing archive," Zola said.
The computer screen showed them old footage of Johann Schmidt/Red Skull of how SHIELD actually came to be.
"HYDRA was founded on the belief that humanity could not be trusted with its own freedom. What we did not realize, was that if you try to take that freedom, they resist. The war taught us much. Humanity needed to surrender its freedom willingly. After the war, SHIELD was founded and I was recruited. The new HYDRA grew. A beautiful parasite inside SHIELD. For seventy years HYDRA has been secretly feeding crisis, reaping war. And when history did not cooperate, history was changed," Zola explained.
"That's impossible. SHIELD would have stopped you," Natasha pointed out.
"Accidents will happen," Zola pointed out.
The computer screen showed them HYDRA killed Howard and Maria Stark, making it look like a simple car accident along with the recent death of Nick Fury.
"HYDRA created a world so chaotic that humanity is finally ready to sacrifice its freedom to gain its security. Once the purification process is complete, HYDRA's new world order will arise. We won, Captain. Your death amounts to the same as your Life; a zero sum," Zola explained.
In anger Y/N punched the main computer screen Zola was on.
"As I was saying..." Zola said.
"What's on this drive?" Y/N demanded.
"Project Insight requires insight. So I wrote an algorithm," Zola answered.
"What kind of algorithm? What does it do?" Natasha asked.
"The answer to your question is fascinating. Unfortunately, you shall be too dead to hear it," Zola told them.
The doors started to close and Steve tried to stop it with his his shield but it closed before it could get there. Natasha grabbed the drive then looked at her phone.
"Steve, Y/N, we got a bogey. Short range ballistic. 30 seconds tops," Natasha told them.
"Who fired it?" Steve asked.
"SHIELD," Natasha answered.
"Damn," Y/N remarked.
"I am afraid I have been stalling, Americas. Admit it, it's better this way. All of us...out of time," Zola said.
Steve and Y/N saw a small opening on the ground. He moved the metal door aside and just as the place was exploding, Y/N threw herself and Natasha into the hole and protected her while Steve protected both of them with his shield.
They managed to get out from under the building rubble just as STRIKE agents arrived to roam the area for them.
"Call in the asset," Rumlow said, noticing footprints.
