Chapter 27: Fury's Alive

Hill took them to a secret facility underground. Someone was running toward them as Y/N helped Natasha put pressure on her wound.

"GSW. She's lost at least a pint," Hill informed.

"Maybe two," Sam added.

"Let me take her," the doctor requested.

"She'll want to see him first," Hill said.

She took them to another part of the cave for all four of them to see Nick Fury, alive and lying in bed. They were in complete shock.

"About damn time," Nick stated.

The doctor sat Natasha down and started putting pressure on her gunshot wound as Nick explained what happened.

"Lacerated spinal column, cracked sternum, shattered collarbone, perforated liver, one hell of a headache," Nick listed.

"Don't forget your collapsed lung," the doctor reminded.

"Oh, let's not forget that. Otherwise, I'm good," Nick responded.

"They cut you open, your heart stopped," Natasha pointed out.

"Tetrodotoxin B. Slows the pulse to one beat a minute. Banner developed it for stress. Didn't work so great for him, but we found a use for it," Nick told them.

"Why all the secrecy? Why not just tell us?" Steve asked.

"Any attempt on the director's life had to look successful," Hill answered.

"Can't kill you if you're already dead. Besides, I wasn't sure who to trust," Nick added.

After explaining everything, everyone left the room except for Y/N.

"I gather that you want to speak with me," Nick said.

"Yeah," Y/N answered.

"So?" he urged.

"I just wanted to say thanks for getting my shield. Steve told me that you found it and gave it to him to give it to me," she explained.

"I did. And you're welcome," Nick told her.

Y/N headed for the exit, but looked back at Nick for a minute.

"Glad you're alive," she told him.

"You and me both," he said.

They smiled and she left the room.
