Chapter 1
I wake up to the sound of the Balance's alarm. There must be a lot of energy circulating in the air; maybe because it's my sixteenth birthday, today I become a full wizard. My power is fully developed. There's just one thing to do, we must discover what kind of wizard I am, I could be a user, they control one of the four elements, water, air, fire or earth. In the other side, I could be an awakened, they control the four of them, they are much more powerful than the users. Dad says I might be an awakened, but I don't think so, but if so, I'll be the first awakened of the entire Krone lineage...
The Balance is a machine that takes all the extra magic energy that circulates in the air. Like I turned into full-wizard, the Balance is advicing that there's energy around that hadn't been taken. I get down the stairs and eat breakfast. There's no one, that's so strange. I wait that mom and dad and Emily and Jason jump out of nowhere and start singing Happy Birthday. Nothing. I get down the basement, the Balance is there. The lights are off and when I turn them on, not surprisingly, mom, Jason and Emily start singing Happy Birthday while dad holds a cake behind them; well it's really a pie, Lemon Pie, my favorite.
''...Happy Birthday, Ezra, Happy Birthday to you''
''Thanks'' I say.
''Oh, you're sixteen, look at you you are so...'' mom says, playing with my face ''so old. A full-wizard now''
She's a water user, if I'm not an awakened I want to be water or air user, I've always liked those.
Dad hands me a plate with pie.
''Still thinking you'r not going to be an awakened?'' dad says.
''Patrick, leave him alone! If he doesn't think that, leave it and stop arguing'' mom says.
'' Sorry, I'm just trying to prepare him, I know he will be the first awakened in the Krone lineage,'' Dad says ''Plus, Elsa, you have to realize that our son has developed his powers, yesterday he was making papers fly and today, well, he's setting the candles''
He's right, my birthday candles are on, and I don't really know how, but I know I did it.
''Shut up and wait for The Tattoos to show'' Emily shouts, she's my sister and Jason is my brother.
''Emily's right,'' Jason cries; the next he says, he do it slowly and sarcastic ''Wait for The Tattoos''
'' I'm just saying'' dad says
The Tattoos are marks that appears in any part of your body, but they're always visible, that tells you what you are, for example mom's a water user and she have a drop tattooed in her inner forearm, just as every water user does. Dad on the other side, he's an air user so he has curves and spirals tattooed.
We eat, talk, watch TV just like every family does in a normal super-mega-important-birthday-for-your-son's-life day and relax. It isn't until 6:56 am. that I feel something burning in my forearm. I put my palms up so they are looking to the ceiling and a black dot starts to grow and shape-change until I have my tattoo, it's a drop, just like my mother's, in the inner part of my forearm, more or less where the veins are, just like my mother's.
''I knew it, and I told you,'' mom says to dad, half joke half serious. Then she turns to me ans says: ''I can teach you''
But then another dot starts to form just right aside the drop, it's a flame, and then another, and another. Soon I have the four elements in my forearm. They start to glow and, literally, moving across my skin, in matter of seconds they have all come together and become one. The new tattoo is a circle and another circle inside, connected by curves, it's like a sun, but at the same time it isn't.
Dad clears his throat and says: ''Correction, I knew it''
''Well, sorry then,'' mom says.
''Repeat that,'' dad says to mom, laughing
''There's no human, alien, animal, magical way I'm saying that again, remind me that, Ezra, please''
''Ok, guys, forget the competition, this isn't a competiton, ok?'' I say'' today is an important day of my life and you are playing!"
"Sorry" they say, like they are defenseless pups and I'm their mother.
"It doesn't matter, just take this seriously, you" I point my finger to my mom"will teach me all I need to know about water, and you"I say pointing it to may father '' will teach me everything about air I need to know''
"Fine," they say; again, at the same time, this is very, very awkward.
"Guys, we are getting late for school" Emily is talking now.
"Oh, yeah... Here!," mom take three bags from the floor and hand them to us "hope you like butter with American Cheese sandwiches, an orange juice and an extra slice of pie for Ezra"
I take mine and Emily and Jason do the same
"Sounds good. Good-bye" I kiss mom and hug dad.
When we reach school, everything is normal, until we get to the amphitheater and the celebration begins.
