"Don't worry honey. You are going to love your new school soon" Mom kissed my forehead.
"Yeah , whatever" I shrugged as I picked my school bag and walked outside.
"You'll do fine sweetheart" dad stopped unpacking the boxes and winked at me.
"No one likes the city kid dad. I'm going to get bullied" I huffed.
"This is not like miami...  People are more friendly and easy going. I'm sure you will fit it within weeks. Just make some friends with the popular kids and you will be fine" he nodded nonchalantly.

I walked towards the gate with hesitation. My hands fumbled with my bag.

High school is scary. Entering a new school is more scary. Especially in a new city, that shit is terrifying. I wandered around with the map in my hands. I had to get a map from the administration office for guidance. My class schedule was fucked up. I had just few minutes before my first class began.  I hate this place already.

"Who are you ?" A voice caught my attention.  I turned around and saw a girl staring at me like I was some kind of caterpillar.
"A...A...Alice" I went for a handshake. She grabbed the map from my hands instead.
"Eighth grade ?" She lifted an eyebrow
"Freshman" I smiled.
I get this question often . I am too short for my age.
"No kidding. Me too" she smiled and introduced herself, "I'm kayla" .
"Alice" I smiled back.
"You already said that" she giggled. "It's building twelve. Come with me" she grabbed my hand without second thought and I followed her like a sheep.

Thanks to kayla, We found our classes just in time and settled down. As an introvert, my worst nightmare is to stand up and introduce myself to the class. But sadly, that is what happens on first days.

"I'm Alice. Alice sheroff. I am 14. I just moved in here with my parents from Miami . I have no siblings and.... well that's it" I smiled nervously.
Mr. Kevin gave me a nod.
"Did you make any new friends here, Ms.sheroff ?" He questioned. All I wanted to do was to run to my last desk and hide under it.
"Kayla. She's there" I pointed to her and whole class turned to her. She blushed and smiled nervously.
"Tell us about your hobbies or any special interests" he gestured to the whole class. 60 pairs of eyes were staring at me.
"I play soccer" I blurted and walked to my desk. I had no time for all this questions.
"Okay then. Welcome to Freeman high school. Let's get into today's class" he took over from there.
"Why did you have to do that ? " kayla gave me a stern look.
"Sorry. I didn't know anyone else's name" I sat and covered my face .
The class went on for what seemed like forever.

I was looking around for a place to sit. None of the tables were free.
"Hey newbie !" Kayla yelled and half of the cafeteria turned to her including me. "Wanna join us ?" She raised an eyebrow and I nodded. I slowly walked towards the table and placed my food tray down.
"Hi" I sat and she introduced me to her friends. Michael, oliver and another guy whose name was something like kim whoosh shoosh . Uhhh whatever !

"What are you? " Kayla's question threw me off guard.
"Excuse me ?" I cringed involuntarily.
"Your skin colour. It is unique. A slight dusky touch with glow. What are you ? I am not a racist. I am just curious " She asked me .
"My mom is from Italy. Dad is from new york" I shrugged.
"Half latina ! Mamma mia !" Oliver winked and they all huffed.
"What ? I learned that word in T.V" he shook his head.
"What about you ?" I pointed my fork towards her.
"Isn't that obvious ?" She smiled.

I observed her. Light skin with a touch of melanin, slim yet strong arms, average height, curly chocolate brown hair (might be a dye, who knows), a hannah montana tee shirt with lacy skirt that reaches upto her knees. She was simple yet "catchy" !

"African mother , american father  ??" I gave it a shot.
"Vice versa" she said.
"Do you even know what vice versa
Means" kim blah blah laughed.
"So... ?" I looked at her.
"Wild oats of africa sown in the US" she giggled.
"What does that mean ?" Michael talked for the first time.
Oliver said something in his ears and they both laughed. This gang seemed immature and sure giggles a lot. I looked around but I didn't think I would fit in with anyone else so I decided to stay and give it a go. I cannot afford to lose any friends now.
