A Letter From The Past

I yawned groggily and opened the door to my safe haven, kicking off the uncomfortable fancy dress shoes that I am forced to wear to work.

I loosened my bowtie and casually threw my suitcase on the counter nearby, ready to fully indulge myself in a good anime and green tea. Now that I was home, it was time for me to live the ultimate comfy life of pajamas.

I hummed contentedly to myself then stopped midway.

Hmmm... What's this?

There was a foreign object on the wooden floor, appearing to be a letter of some sort.

It wasn't here this morning.

The letter was inscribed beautifully with personalized hand-lettering and sealed with expensive-looking wax.

Come on now. Who sends letters anymore?

But still, I can't help but praise the envelope's fine quality. The smoothness of the paper possessed a faint yet fragrant smell.

Heck, it even feels expensive to just hold it.

I noticed that the writing for my address seemed awfully familiar but unable to recall right now who the sender might be.

I shrugged and proceeded to microwave my Chicken Katsu Bento, change into my comfy pajamas then turn on the TV. I have been waiting for this episode all day!

While I wait for my show, guess I'll give this a read.

To our dearest old friend,

If you are reading this, it means that we have passed away.

Is this who I think it is?

We had taken a flight two days ago to which it failed to reach its destination. You might have a lot of questions on your mind right now. But we will have our butler, Amniel, fill in the rest of the information for you.

It's Damien and Anna... Only in modern society, the two of them are lunatic enough to have a butler.

We have a special request  please take care of our daughter. I know that we are in no place to ask you but please...You are the only one that we can trust.

This typical duo, always asking me for help at the strangest times. Some things just never change.

If you choose to, meet tomorrow at noon at the Convenience Store on Rosemead Blvd. If you do not wish to, we totally understand. Simply burn this letter and pretend nothing happened.

We have burdened you so much in the past already. You do not need to feel pressured to agree.

But still, if you decide to... we truly and deeply thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You have our utmost gratitude.

P.S. Thank you for giving me self-esteem when I needed it the most. Also, I still cherish that handcrafted fountain pen you gave me for my 21st birthday  Anna.

P.S.S. Thank you for teaching me how to play the guitar (to impress Anna). And of course, save me from deep shit that one time. Yeah... remember when I got wasted AF at that party and almost started a fight HAHA. Good times! Damien.

And above all, we thank you for helping transform our marriage from a dream to a reality. We can't be happier!

Our only regret is that we did not find the time to catch up after we graduated from university.

Now then, old friend. You take good care of yourself.

Thanks for everything!

With love,

Damian and Anna.

Yikes. If you write cheesy emotional things like this, it only makes it harder for me to say no.

I analyzed my surrounding: a single apartment room where the living room is simultaneously and tragically my bedroom. The hallway toward the right corner was my tiny excuse for a kitchen and the entrance door. Not to mention there's only one restroom that runs out of hot water randomly when you are showering.

With the circumstances and environment I am currently in right now, I doubt I can.

Sorry old friends.

I turned on the stove and prepare to burn the letter into untraceable ashes. I put the note back in the envelope and that's when I realize there was something shiny inside.

I suddenly chuckled to myself. Emotions gradually starting to sink in as my eyes were now somewhat watery. Tiny fragments of flashback played in my mind.

You fools... You two kept THIS all these years?!

Even though I threw it away a long time ago.

I can't believe you two took the huge hassle to find it for me.

I held the radiant Gold Medallion in my palm for a couple of seconds before putting it on my computer desk. A bittersweet memento from the past.

Alright, Damien and Anna. I'll do it for old time sake...

...so that way, the both of you may rest in peace.
