I stared up at the bright blinking lights of the night sky as my feet hung off the edge of the metal roof. I shut my eyes as the cool Autumn air caressed my face gently and the soft sounds of animals soothed my cluttered mind.
“You okay?” Jeff asked, breaking the pleasant silence and pulling me down from my ivory tower. “Yeah why?” I asked and looked at his face, his skin glowed under the soft rays of the moonlight and the gentle wind blew his hair perfectly, he looked almost angelic, like something straight out of heaven.
“You seem kind of weird” he said as he scanned my face. “I just killed a lot of people, I assured you, I’m elated” I said and laughed a bit. “You look like you um...I don’t know the word...like you wish you didn’t do it” he said as he furrowed his eyebrows as if he was thinking really hard about it.
“Regret?”
“Yeah, that, do you?” he said as he pushed black silky strains of hair out of his face and stared up at the sky. “No, I don’t regret any of my kills, do you?”
“One...my brother, Liu, I didn’t mean to kill him, I just got caught up in rage and bloodlust, I didn’t want to do it...” he said and looked down at the people walking on the street beneath us. “It’s okay Jeff” I could tell this bothered him and that he was distraught about it, he must’ve really loved his brother. “It already happened, and you can’t do anything about it, you shouldn’t beat yourself up about it”
He was silence for a few seconds but his gaze slowly lifted, “You know...I actually l- hate you” he growled the last part of the sentence and shot a cold piercing glance at me. Before I could say anything, he jumped off the roof and ran into the thicket, leaving me there, stunned and utterly confused. ‘Am I dreaming? What the hell just happened’
I shrugged and jumped off the roof, I stuck my knife in my hoodie’s pocket and pulled up my hood as I walked through the small alleyway. As I approached a man, I kept my head low and stabbed him in the stomach emotionlessly, as if killing gave me no happiness anymore. I kicked his body off my feet and stuck my hands in my pocket as I walked into the clearing. I looked down at the knife and saw, ‘Jeff.W’ carved into the wooden handle, ‘this is Jeff’s....’
I dragged my feet along as I made it to the house, I pressed my finger against the scanner at the front door and it slid open. I lazily walked up the stairs to Jeff’s room, and pulled at the door, ‘Fuck’ I mentally cursed myself as I realized Jeff didn’t enter my fingerprint. I walked down the stairs and dropped my body weight on the couch. I curled up into a ball as I pulled the blankets onto my body and slowly drifted to sleep.
