She's Probably Better Off

Terry🌳

I knew that Terry and Clover had gone out. I just wish I knew if it had been better than ours.

Katy texted all of us to meet at the park today to go biking. After Clover took off, Max followed before I could. It would look weird if I went after her now.

I stayed behind with Julia who seemed okay with this arrangement. She told me about her old house in Colorado and her grandparents. She was nice, and I tried to pay attention, but I kept glancing over at Max and Clover. They were laughing and having a good time. After an hour Clover took off her skates. I could see her a few yards along the path in front of me.

I saw Max run up to her and talk to her smiling. She got up, but then clumsily fell into Max and they both landed on the ground. Clover was on top of Max and she quickly got up and tried to stand.

I was so jealous. I wish that had been me. We went to eat after that and I left early.

Three months later:

It was already April. Everyone had started getting hyped over the end of year freshmen dance. I was pretty bumped. Over the last month I had separated myself from the group and I hadn't talked to anyone but Clover and occasionally Max. I figured they were dating by now. I got home from school and was thankful it was a Thursday.

"Terry?" My mother called.

"Hey mom, is everything okay?"

"I wanted to talk to you about the move. We need your input by three weeks from now."

"I'm sorry. I'll tell you then. I still need to think about it."

"I understand it's okay, we still have some time."

The next day I saw that same prom flyer on the wall. April 26th. It was April 17th. I wondered who didn't have a date by now. The lunch bell rang and I headed to lunch. I saw my friends and their table at the far corner.

I walked over to it. They were laughing. "Can I sit?" I asked.

"Sure, yeah grab a chair," Katy said.

"What have you been up to?" Sebastian asked.

"Yeah," Julia followed up smiling at me.

"I just felt a little stuck for a few weeks."

"Oh, well, hope you're feeling-" Sebastian trailed off as he looked over my shoulder. "I'll be right back."

He left to the table with a group of guys. I watched them talk for a bit and then Sebastian came back with a rose in his hand.

Was he going to ask Katy to the freshmen prom? Right now?

He got Katy's hand. The group of guys cleared their table and Sebastian lead Katy on to the table. He gave her the rose. Katy was confused.

"Can I have everyone's attention?" The room turned quiet. "I would like to do this in public because there is a more likely scenario she will say yes. Katy Hopher, we began dating last year after our friends pushed us together. We've been on lots of dates and you've never failed to surprise me. You always showed me a great time and understood when to help and when to let me think. You're beautiful and smart, and kind in the way you always wanted everyone to spend time together."

Katy was blushing pink by this point.

"So," Sebastian continued. "Would you go to the freshmen prom with me?"

"Absolutely I will Sebastian!" She said happily and she then jumped off the table and hugged Sebastian. Everyone clapped.

That was really sweet of Sebastian.

I went home that evening and found my mom looking at the proposal on a social media page.

"Is this why you're so down? Because of the Freshmen Prom? Have you asked her?" My mom asked.

"No, how could I? I haven't talked more than a few words in weeks. I can't."

"You never know. Does she have a date yet?"

"No, but she'll be better off."

"Don't say that."

"She will be better off."
