When we arrived at Mason's house the place was already teaming with people, sweaty bodies spilling out of the vibrating building and onto the garden and front drive. Jess strode into the party with her usual air of dominance and sass, leaving the rest of us to follow. I caught Aria and Melody exchanging an unreadable look as they followed in her wake. I grinned at Erin and moved to link arms with her when a strong arm curled snugly around my waist and pulled me back into a firm chest.
"Hello gorgeous." A deep voice whispered in my ear and I smiled as I spun to face him.
"Hey Mase." I greeted him softly before leaning into kiss him. Mason Greenford, my boyfriend of three years, grinned and leaned in to brush his lips to mine again. I could already taste the light tang of beer that laced his mouth, though his overly affectionate actions were evidence enough that he'd started drinking early. I nipped his lip in reprimand and slapped his hand that had wandered down to firmly squeeze my arse. He smiled sheepishly.
"Sorry babe." He said, the mischievous twinkle in his eyes belying his words.
"Oi Greenford. Stop mauling my best-friend." Jess ordered as she took a sip of whatever liquor she held in her plastic cup. She leaned against the door frame of the living room watching us with dry amusement, ignoring the many guys that were running their eyes over her body. She really did look stunning. She'd chosen to wear a red lace bodysuit with a dangerously plunging neckline, showcasing her ample curves. She'd teased, primped and curled her short hair into a sexy dishevelled gold mess and she absently twirled a chunk around her finger as she gave me a tight grin. As her eyes roamed the room I could tell she was on the hunt. That poor new guy really doesn't stand a chance.
Mason rolled his eyes at me before turning to face her.
"A pleasure to see you Jess. Looking stunning as always." He complimented her with a charming smile.
She rolled her eyes.
"I know."
He snorted. Mason and Jess had always had a rocky relationship with each other, seeing as the first time Jess met Mason she'd been determined to make him hers. I still remember the way her eyes had snagged on him when she'd first noticed him in school. Mason had always been liked by everyone and known as being a nice guy but when he'd started to shine as a rugby player, and also started to fill out his uniform in an extremely tantalising way, he was a sudden social supernova as girls swarmed him.Jess and I had been laying on the edge of the school field, Jess dressed in a minuscule white shorts and crop top set, contrasting to my denim shorts and off the shoulder grey top. Mason had been walking off the field laughing with a friend as he pulled his helmet off his head and ran his hand through his sweaty hair. Jess sat up straight and pushed her sunglasses up into her hair and stared at him shamelessly.
"Who. Is. That?" She'd asked slowly, and I'd groaned recognising her predatory tone. I'd glanced up from my book to see who her newest victim was and raised my brows when I saw Mason.
"Mason Greenford." I'd answered distractedly, before concentrating on my page again. Gatsby was waiting nervously for Daisy to arrive at Nick's house.
"Is he new?" Jess asked, in the same hungry tone. I sighed in aggravation.
"No, he's been at this school as long as we have Jess."
"Well why haven't I seen him before then?" Jess said snootily. I pursed my lips and tried to shut her out as I focused on the words in front of me. Jess rolled over and angled her head so it was resting directly on my book. She stared up at me in defiant amusement.
"Jess..." I whined, and she grinned sticking her tongue out.
"Quit being a nerd for two minutes to tell me about Mason and then I'll leave you alone." She tried to barter. I flicked her head.
"Fine. But after that we are sitting in uninterrupted silence for twenty minutes." I said, my tone final. She rolled her eyes before nodding. She scrambled up and leaned back on her palms, waiting.
"Mason Greenford. Plays rugby. He's in my chemistry class. He's smart, a nice guy. Too nice to be chewed up and spat out by you." I said dryly, but she just grinned evilly.
"Why haven't I seen him before?" She asked again impatiently.
"Probably because he's only recently...blossomed. Puberty works wonders." I said absently as I returned to my book. She chuckled throatily, eyes fixated with the intensity of a hunting lioness as she gazed at him where he sat on the benches and joked with his teammates.
"Hmm yes. I think I'll have him." She declared casually. I'd glanced up at Mason, feeling a vague sense of pity for him. Once Jess had her mind set on a boy that was it. He was hers whether he knew it or not. As if hearing my thoughts he looked up at that moment and caught my gaze. He studied me for a second before smiling crookedly. I felt my cheeks heat and quickly looked down again.I was jolted back the present as Mason kissed my temple.
"Want a drink baby?" He asked, smiling down at me. I nodded and absently caressed his chest.
"Vodka please." I said with a wink. He nodded and tucked a lock of hair behind my ear before turning and heading off into the kitchen.
"You two are nauseating." Jess said with an eye roll as she slinked over to stand beside me.
"It's no surprise he can't keep his hands off you though. You look super hot tonight." She complimented which was unusually gracious of her. Jess didn't like to give compliments, she liked receiving them. I smiled my thanks. My golden-brown hair fell in wild beach waves and I'd accentuated my blue eyes with silver eyeshadow. I'd worn a white long sleeved bodysuit with a low neckline revealing a fair amount of cleavage, and paired it with a distressed denim skirt and plain trainers, much to Jess, Aria and Melody's contempt.
"Really? Those shoes?" Melody had said snootily, sharing a look with Aria.
"Shut up." Jess had commanded icily, as she lined her eyes with an expert flick of liner, without even looking up from the mirror. Melody's pouty mouth clamped shut, her face tight with anger. Jess didn't even glance at her, but instead turned to look at my shoes.
"They are fucking gross though, B." She'd stated with a smile.I leaned against the wall beside Jess, and grinned to myself as Erin flirted and preened while talking to Adam Daniels, the guy she'd harboured a longtime crush on. I smiled as he said something which made her flush like a tomato. It was nice to see her looking confident and happy. If a little flustered.
"So have you acquired your target yet?" I asked knowingly as Jess remained silent beside me, sipping her drink. Her full lips twisted as she scowled.
"No. Where the fuck is he?" She complained moodily, mussing her hair.
"I'm sure the poor guy will be here soon. Like a lamb to the slaughter." I teased, causing her to grin.
"Don't worry, I intend to let him worship this alter, not sacrifice him on it." She said coyly, gesturing to her curvy figure. I shook my head at her in amusement as Mason returned and instantly tucked me into his side. He placed a drink in my hand, before turning and placing light kisses up the length of my neck and peppering my cheek. I snorted and pushed at him, he always gets over affectionate when drunk. He laughed at my attempts to fend him off while Jess made passive aggressive gagging noises.
"Hey, Mase! You're up!" One of his teammates called from a pool table, waving a cue at him in challenge.
"I'm busy!" He yelled back, sneaking in another quick kiss on my cheek. I shoved him in their direction.
"Take him please!" I called laughing, and Mason shook his head chuckling before raising his hands in defeat and starting to walk towards his friend. He turned around walking backwards, as he grinned at me.
"I'm coming back soon." He warned playfully before turning and migrating through the heaps of people. I sipped the vodka and coke he'd fixed for me and grinned as a poor guy tried to flirt with Jess. She rolled her eyes and snapped at him to go away.
"Jess...be nice." I reprimanded in a motherly tone causing her to pout at me.
"He was staring at my boobs." She whined and I rolled my eyes grinning.
"You like it when guys stare at your boobs."
She huffed.
"Yeah, but tonight I only want the hot new guy to stare at my boobs." She complained. I took another swig of my drink, smiling as the alcohol started to take an effect making me feel light and airy.
"Seriously Jess, you'll be so disappointed if he's just a regular joe." I commented lightly, nudging her hip with mine. She straightened suddenly, her eyes snagging on something near the door way. Her green eyes brightened in lust and hunger as she grinned slowly in a mixture of both surprise and excitement.
"Well there's certainly no danger of that." She said with a lazy chuckle, as she absently ran her finger over her neckline. I craned to try and see the mysterious new guy, but I couldn't see over the heads of all the milling people, I didn't have heels on like Jess.
"Hot as you expected?" I asked curiously. Her lips curled in a possessive smile.
"Hotter." She breathed out, eyes still fixed on him. Suddenly a giggling bunch of girls moved to go outside and my eyes widened as I saw him. He was tall, around six foot three, with a strong, broad frame. My eyes were drawn to the way he carried himself more than anything, the relaxed gait of his shoulders, the confident tilt to his chiselled jaw, the sexy bow legged stance of his long legs. I guilty let my eyes linger on the thick muscles cording his denim coated thighs. He was dressed plainly in faded denim jeans and a steel grey Henley, the sleeves rolled up revealing his toned gold forearms. He had the most beautiful skin, a deep burnished gold colour, and my eyes hungrily lingered on the smooth chords of his muscled neck, peaking out from his collar, and his large graceful hands. I instantly flushed, feeling guilty and embarrassed to be so intensely staring and lusting after a complete stranger, with my boyfriend in the room nonetheless. My gaze snagged on his gorgeous face and I froze.
I know that face.
It's him.
It can't be.
But it is.
I'd know those silver-grey eyes anywhere. I'd seen them gaze at me in hurt and confusion and fill up with tears. I'd seen them stare at me in resentment and shock. I'd seen them simmer with hate.
And now here I was gazing into them again.
