HISTORY:
Coach House Books was first "started" so to say in 1965. I say this because in 1965, Stan Bevington started printing copies of the new Canadian maple leaf flag rather than books. Not too much later he decided to rent an old coach house and bought a Challenge Gordon platen press and with his colleague, Dennis Reid, printed the poetry of Wayne Clifford. Onwards, Coach House Books continued to print books as well as publish them, which they still do today for many of Canada's literary presses and the University of Toronto.
PUBLISHING INFO:
- Coach House Books receives several hundred submissions each year and only roughly ten are accepted.
- They Publish only Canadian authors because of the grant funding from the federal and provincial government.
- Coach House Books publishes innovative Literary Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Poetry.
- They accept if not encourage submissions from members of diverse communities such as indigenous writers, writers of a different race, writers from the LGBTQ+ community as well as writers from different marginalized groups.
- On the other hand, they make it very clear that they do not publish Children's books, Cookbooks, Fantasy, Historical Romances, Memoirs, Mysteries, Science Fiction, or Self-Help Books.
