From what Catherine had studied, I needed to learn to control my powers, even when in the worst circumstances. After working an easy shift at the bar, I came home one hour before Catherine's shift ended. "Hi there", I say kind of quietly to Catherine. Even though she says she's 'perfectly fine', I know she feels uncomfortable about me staying with her. I go to the little bedroom Catherine and I share and I sit down on my straw mattress, and close my eyes.
I see all kinds of faces. Some are familiar. Then, at the end, I see my parent's faces, crying. They look scared. I notice they're in our house, standing by our front door, looking out the window at the dark blanket of night. From whatever point of view I'm looking from, I hear a loud crash, turn to see a figure rushing at me and my parents. I hear screams, something touches me, shaking me vigorously. I scream for help, then I just see red everywhere.
I open my eyes. Catherine's face is staring back at me, in concern. "Leslie. Leslie. Shhh...goodness, you scared me, screaming like that." I blush in embarrassment. I was screaming. I turn my head to see Samantha in the door frame, looking at me, with a hint of fear shining in her dark eyes. "I...I'm sorry. I was dreaming...", I splutter, still shocked from the dream. Samantha leaves the door frame, and goes back to the kitchen. Catherine goes to her desk and pulls out some blank papers. "Tell me what you dreamt.", she orders. "Well...do you think they mean anything?", I ask concerned. 'What if my parents are in trouble?', I worry. 'What was that thing that came rushing at me?' I explained the whole dream. After writing it down, Catherine paused to think. "I'm starting to think that maybe your dreams may reflect on real life...I can not be sure, but from what others have told me...", she trails off. A wave of dread comes over me. "Hey, I may be wrong.", Catherine says, putting her paper back, and embracing me. "Are you up for a training session. I can find out so much now..." There is a silence as she waits for an answer. "Oh, and I brought you something.", she says, and runs out of the room. I wonder what it is, and I'm pushing away my hopes that the surprise is blood. She returns with a bottle of some liquid. "Here try this. It's a substitute. I'm not sure if it works, but will you try it?", she hands me the bottle, and opens it expertisely, after years of practice. The liquid smells good, not as amazing as real blood, but I take it eagerly. I take a small sip. It's sweet, like a sugar drink, and salty at the same time--amazing. I drain the bottle quickly. "So I take that you like it?", she asks, smiling, taking the bottle from me. I nod, "Where did you get it?", I ask. "Connections.", she says secretly.
We go out to the space between Catherine and Samantha's house and the woods. "Alright, well, I don't think we can do much with this, but, you should acquire one power. It may be telekenisis, mind reading, manipulation, having elemental control. We just need to find out what it is.", Catherine explains. "Try those things.", she prompts. I think, imagining the wood on top of the woodpile moving a couple inches, or at least, rising up in the air. Nothing. I try to make a breeze, but the air is as still as ever. I try to silently convince Catherine to pick blades of grass for me. Catherine continues to look at me, studying me as she's been doing. I feel a bit dissapointed, hoping for something cool, but nothing comes. I try to see what Catherine is thinking, but I don't hear or see anything, except for a rustling bush nearby. I turn around, hoping I've cause the rustling, but instead a large figure comes hurling at me, and I hear a scream.
