Jess's POV
I head downstairs for dinner after finishing up my homework for the night. I sit down at the table and pull out my phone and start scrolling through Instagram.
"So Jess," my mother says placing my dinner in front of me, "did you have a good first day of school?"
"Yeah it was good." I mumble not looking up from my phone.
"Do you want to tell me more about it?than just 'oh it was good'?" she asks mocking my tone of voice.
"Well, I spent most of my day hanging out with Augustus, my classes went well, I haven't really met any new friends yet. You know, just getting through the day...." I said not wanting to tell her about Gus's issue with Dan and his crew.
"Good, I'm glad it went well. I have to be in to the office early tomorrow morning so you will be on your own. I'm heading to bed, goodnight sweetie." She says kissing the top of my head and heading up the steps.
I slowly finish my dinner and then head upstairs to get ready for bed. As soon as I climb under the covers I feel a wave of sleepiness come over me. I think about what all today has held from telling Dan to leave Augustus alone, to playing basketball in the driveway and him tackling me for the ball. I can't wait to see what tomorrow will bring I think to myself as sleep overtakes my thoughts.
----
I wake up to my alarm clock blaring next to my head. I hop out of my bed and rub the sleep out of my eyes. My phone buzzes on my nightstand and I see that it's a text from Augustus.
'Good morning Jess! Walk or take the bus this morning?'
I decide to text back 'Good morning Gus! Why don't we just walk to and from school from now on? It's not a far walk'
Almost instantly he texted back 'Sure, why not? See ya in a bit!'
I go to my closet to quick throw on a pair of dark blue shorts, Marvel vans, and a loose grey tank. I loosely curled my hair and put on the makeup basics: some powder and mascara. I don't like to wear to much makeup because I am a firm believer in the fact that makeup doesn't make a girl pretty, their attitude and personality do.
I grab my bag and run downstairs to grab and eat a yogurt and banana before leaving the house to walk to school with Gus. I see him shuffling up my driveway, looking at the ground.
"Hey, are you okay?" I ask a hint of worry in my voice.
"What? Oh, yeah.... I'm fine. I just don't want to have any more conversations with Dan." He says looking back down at the ground.
"I won't let that happen. Please trust me, it will be okay. I want to make this a happy rest of the school for you." I reply putting my hand on his shoulder and smiling up at him.
"Alright, I trust you. Now, let's get going, we don't want to be late."
We walk to school talking about random things and laughing for no reason.
As soon as we get into school and walk to our lockers, I see trouble walking our way. I mentally cursed Dan because up until this point Gus was actually happy. I quick grab my books and try to drag Gus the other way but I was to late. Dan came up and 'accidentally' ran into Gus's shoulder making him drop his books on the floor. At that point I'd had enough.
As Dan walked away down the hallway I ran up behind him and gave him a hard shove so he stumbled forward.
"What is wrong with you?!" I yelled. By now people had stopped to stare.
He turned around to stare at me with anger in his eyes.
"What did you say?" He stepped closer to me.
"I asked what is wrong with you." I spat.
"Oh, believe me, there is nothing wrong with me. It's not my fault that he decided to be stupid and quit playing basketball and stopped being popular. He did it to himself when he got with Hazel, he got all soft and crap." He said. "I can't help stupid people." He whispered.
He was so infuriating!
"He is not stupid! He couldn't help that he had to quit playing. Not everyone enjoys being popular and likes to party so just leave him alone!" I yell at Dan.
All he did was let out a chuckle and roll eyes.
At that point I had no idea what I was doing. One minute I was standing with my fists clenched together and the next thing I know my fist connected with Dan's nose making him stumble backwards. He bent over grabbing his nose and I felt Gus grab my arm before I could do anymore damage. There was a sudden commotion in the hallway as I saw the principal pushing through the crowd toward us.
"Miss Collins, Mr. Meyer I'd like to see you in my office. Now." He gestured toward Dan and I and then left the crowd with us following. I quickly turn back to Augustus before I leave.
"I'll be back. I'll walk home with you, see you later." I give him a small smile and follow Mr. Anderson down the hall into his office.
Even though I might get in trouble for this, I don't regret doing any of it because I helped Augustus.
