I run through the school halls, empty after the bell rang just before I entered the school. "Shit shit shit shit shit." I scramble, my bag hanging loosely on one shoulder, my cardigan falling off, my ponytail falling out. This is why I always wake up early, so I don't have to be in a rush. Today, however, after staying up late and texting Jughead and getting to know him last night, I slept in. I finally reach my locker.
I hated being late. Awkwardly peering through the door and disrupting the whole class, all eyes on you. Ugh.
I shuffle through my locker, taking out my math binder, textbook, notebook and pencil case. I look in the mirror in my locker, fixing my image by tightening my ponytail and smoothing over my clothes. I slam my locker shut and pick up my pace, walking towards my class. Once I go up the stairs, I take out my phone from my pocket, looking at the time as I move down the second floor halls. Shit, I'm already 10 minutes late.
Just as I turn off my phone before putting it back in my pocket, my body collides with something hard. I fall to the floor, my books and phone dropping too. I need a second to regain a sense of reality, holding my head as it pounds from the sudden fall.
I squeeze my eyes, hand on my fore head, "I'm so sorry." I say.
I feel the person kneel down, "Fuck, Betts, are you okay?"
I flutter my eyes open, leaning back with my hands on the ground, my knees bent close to my chest as I turn to face them. I let out a quick breathy laugh, "Jug?"
"Don't tell me you got amnesia just from that, weakling." he taunts.
I slap his chest with the back of my hand, "Shut up. What are you doing in the halls? Class has started."
"I'm running late. I could ask you the same thing though, Ms. 'perfect attendance.'"
"Just because I told you that last night doesn't mean you get to hold it over me. Which, by the way, is the reason I'm running through the halls. Our texts last night? Kept me up so late that I slept in this morning."
He sits on the floor next to me, settling in as if we weren't moving anytime soon. "No kidding." he scoffs, "Same here."
I feel my cheeks heat up. I turn my face away, looking down into my lap. For some reason, my stomach fluttered at the thought of our 5 hour conversation last night. Yup, from 9pm to 2am.
"Does that mean you regret it?" he hesitates.
I look at him again, shaking my head. As our eyes lock, I can't seem to make any words come out. God, his eyes were mesmerizing. For a mere moment, I notice his eyes move to my mouth before coming back up. The small action makes my heart heavy. I can't help but look at his lips, the quiet, intimate moment making me want to do nothing else.
I gulp and blink quickly, exiting our daze. "I- uh, I really liked talking to you last night, Juggie." I smile.
His eyes widen, seemingly exiting the trance. "Oh! Yeah, me too Betty. I- I'm... I'm glad we're able to talk now."
The hesitation to his sentence makes me think he wanted to say something else.
Along with my whole body, I feel my face heat up once again. I turn away, gathering my things from the floor into a pile on my lap as I extend my legs straight out onto the floor. I hold the pile up against my chest, swinging my legs around so I sit up on my knees.
