Grazes with the supernatural were not exactly rare when it came to the Lupins, their magical heritage and unpopularity with certain groups had definitely gotten them into precarious situations on many occasions. The most dramatic having happened when Remus was only four years old.

Lyall Lupin was a very clever, rather shy, man. He was a part of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures and always did what was best for his family, but sometimes, the things he said held a power no one imagined.

In early 1965, Fenrir Grey back was brought to the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures for questioning about the deaths of two muggle children and being caught with a werewolf pack. As we now know, Greyback was himself a werewolf, but because the Werewolf Registry was not maintained well at all, the Ministry did not know of his Lycanthropy. Lyall, on the other hand, was able to recognize the signs and voiced his concerns to the committee, recommending that he be detained until the next full moon. However, Lyall's accusations were met with laughter from the committee, causing him to lose his temper and declare werewolves "soulless, evil, deserving nothing but death". Lyall was expelled from the room and Grey back released, while been seen out by a Ministry wizard, who planned to erase his memory of the interrogation, Greyback escaped, his mind set on revenge.

Shortly before Remus' fifth birthday, Greyback struck. He pried open the boy's bedroom window and attacked. Lyall arrived just in time, repelling Greyback with powerful curses, but it was too late. Remus was now a full-fledged werewolf.

Lyall tried all manner of treatments on his son, but none seemed to work. For Wolfsbane Potion had not yet been invented and would not be first brewed until after the mid seventies. Therefore the Lupin's were forced to move to a new town or village whenever their neighbors grew suspicious of Remus' strange behavior. Remus' parents forbade him from playing with other children and his childhood was marked by loneliness and depression.

Lyall was afraid that Remus would not be allowed to attend Hogwarts and had prepared to provide his son with a magical education at home. However, a few days before Remus' birthday, Dumbledore, the headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, arrived at their home. Dumbledore explained that he knew about the attack, for Greyback had boasted of his actions to spies Dumbledore had planted among the dark creatures, and that Remus would be able to attend Hogwarts.

Dumbledore had a plan! The Lupins could not believe it! Their son could go to Hogwarts and live an almost normal life. Even better, as Hope pointed out, they may not have to move anymore if Remus would only be home during Holidays. Everyone seemed overjoyed with this news, preparing for their trip to Diagon Alley and booking a room at the Leaky Cauldron. Nothing could ruin this moment!

Except for one, tiny problem...
