Hi. Nice to meet you. How are you? Where have you been. These are all good ways to say hello to someone. That’s not what my friend, Alayah said to me when she saw me on Halloween. HI. My name’s Rachel. I have shoulder length brown hair that could use a good serving of discipline. Okay, maybe a whole meal. My friends tell me that I have a nasty habit of letting my hair fall in my eyes. Which are a russet brown and always full of questions. Anyways, back to the story,
“Rach! Rach! Rach! Rach! Rach! Rach!” Ala was dressed as a witch. Soot, cobwebs, pot and all.
“What?! What!? What!? What!? What!? What!?” I said from somewhere inside the dark cloak and black floor length dress I was wearing.
“What are you?” She asked. Eyeing my getup.
“I really have no idea.” I replied also looking down at my clothes.
“Well. The rest of us, Lee, Viv, and I, we’re going down to that old abandon manor on 13th street.”
“The one that’s supposed to be haunted?” I asked, doubtful.
“That’s the one!” Ala replied in a chipper tone.
“So you guys are just going to waltz right on in there and, do what exactly?”
“Just check it. Please come. Viv says she won’t come without you.” Ala said, batting her eyelashes at me with a hopeful glance underneath.
“Fine, I guess I can come. But I have to be home by 10 o’clock.”I replied.
Ala jumped up and down excitedly.
“Okay. I told them that we would meet down on 14th st.” Ala said, starting down the street.
I followed her until we came to the street sign. There, we met Vivian and Rylee.
“Finally. I thought you guys would never arrive.” Lee said, always anxious to get a move on.
The 4 of us started down the street. Lee first, then Ala, and Viv and I pulling up the rear. She leaned over and whispered into my ear.
“I’m a little nervous. This was Lee’s idea. She said it was a dare that some of the boys in the neighborhood had made up. And knowing Lee, she never turns down a dare.”
After a few minutes of silent walking, we arrived at the deserted manor house. It had a long driveway and several wooden steps led up to the front door, which hung open slightly. The shutters were broken and the wind made a howling sound as it swept through the empty house. The trees in the yard were dead and had scraggly branches and no leaves. One dim lightbulb hung from the porch and the stone pillars were covered with dirt and some red stains. I hoped it was just rust or grease. The steps creaked and groaned as our little group of rogues made our way up them. We then, one by one, slipped through the door. Viv going last. Once inside, Lee led us up the 3 flights of stairs to the attic. Viv hesitated at the last flight of stairs.
“G-g-guys? I don’t think we should go any further. It-it just seems, I don’t know, wrong.”
“Ah. You’re just scared” Lee replied without turning.
“No. I’m not scared.” Viv said defiantly, marching past. “ I’ll show you.”
She ran up the last flight of stairs and threw open the door. Inside, a single led lightbulb flickered on. On the other side of the room, a door was situated. Viv walked over to it with the rest of us close behind. Viv pulled it open and stepped inside. In a flash of light, she was gone.
