Chapter Eleven
We walked silently for about an hour. Kane stayed a few paces ahead, or rather I stayed a few paces behind. Our stuff was light, but I was still dragging my feet. He knew.
He knew.
"Sky?" Kane asked tentatively. "Are you ok?"
"Yeah," I answered. I didn't push the subject and prayed that he would leave me alone.
He didn't.
"Look," Kane stated, exasperated. "I know something is bothering you and I have a pretty good guess as to what it is. So why don't you just come on out with it?"
"Drop it," I warned. "I don't want to talk right now."
"Yeah, well, you're going to." He dropped his bag on the ground and turned to me. I met his glare with one of my own.
"Stop pushing it," I seethed. "Move."
"No."
"Now. I don't have time for this."
"You had enough time to go back there and talk to Jesse," he pointed out. "You ran right up to him like it was nothing. You were so determined to get what you wanted that I bet you would have stayed there all night, Star be damned."
I reached up to slap his face, but he moved first and trapped my arms to his chest.
"Stop acting like a child," he stated simply. "Tell me what you're thinking."
I wrapped my leg around his ankle and knocked him down. He stayed there, wheezing.
"You are an asshole!" I informed him. "I can't believe you let me believe that the two of you just had a bad relationship. I can't believe that you hid it from me. I trust you with my life, Kane, but I'm starting to regret it."
He jumped up quickly. "You can trust me, Sky. I didn't hide it from you. It's just- We were leaving; it didn't seem like a good idea to just blurt it out to you. I thought that it wouldn't matter once we were away from them."
"He could have killed me!" I was losing it now. Those people were responsible for everything. My parents, my brother, the whole freaking world. The idea made me dizzy. "They are the reason for everything that's happened to us. To you. How could you just walk away like that?"
"I have my reasons," he stated. "One of which being that I need to keep you safe. I promised Star that I wouldn't let anything happen to you when we split. I will not break promise."
By the narrowing of his eyes and the clenching of his jaw and fists, I knew he was telling the truth.
"I don't want to fight," I whispered, giving up. Normally, this would not happen, but my head was aching and my fingertips were tingling. That could only mean one thing. I gulped. "How much longer until the next block?"
Dread filled my heart as Kane replied coolly, "Only two days, tops."
"Isn't there a shorter route?" I grouched. My vision swam. Damn.
"What's the rush?" Kane questioned. He got a good look at my face and knew something was wrong. "Sky?"
I fell to the ground, my legs no longer able to support my weight.
"Shit."
Kane crouched next to me but didn't touch me, somehow knowing that it wasn't what I needed.
"What's wrong?" He asked quietly while searching my face for some sign that I would be okay.
"I'm just... hungry," I replied. I was panting now, soon I would be unconscious. It was moving at an astonishing speed; it usually took me days to feel like this.
"That's it?" Kane asked, confused. I knew what he meant. Everyone was hungry nowadays. There was barely any food left. The Great Hunger swept the earth many years ago, claiming the lives of millions as others died from the force of the natural disasters that hit not long after. We looked to the government to solve our problems, but it was busy fighting its own battle with the hostiles. They showed up around the world, steadily growing in numbers. The leaders of the world decided that the best way to fight this terrorism is to break up into blocks. These blocks became smaller and smaller so that the agents could manage them better.
"Sky?" Kane asked uncertainly. He must have noticed how pale I looked. "What's wrong?"
"We need to get to the next block, fast," I added, emphasizing my point. I was gasping now, my vision tunneling.
"What is it?"
Damn! Didn't he see how important this was? Soon, I wouldn't be able to stand! I needed to find people as quick as possible. We needed shelter, somewhere I could rest.
"I... uh...." I mumbled incoherently.
"Hey," he said softly. Or at least he meant to. My head was pounding and every sound made if worse. It was then that I realized that I wouldn't make it to the next block. "What-"
"We need to go back!" I said in a rush. I had to get the words out before I passed out. Kane's face hardened.
"Hell no."
I couldn't argue anymore. I groaned, and then collapsed, lost to the world. My final thoughts were with Star.
