Kayla's POV:

School flew by and was etched in my memory as a blur of familiar faces...and some faces that weren't so familiar, as I got to know some of the other people in my classes. Labor Day was coming up Monday so we had a long weekend. It was Saturday morning, and my Mother had agreed to let me use the car to go to the beach for the weekend. The cool weather would be coming soon, and I wanted to go enjoy the beach one last time before it was off limits until next summer. I decided to drive to Port Aransas by myself...I needed some time alone to think. I had put my swimsuit on underneath my clothing, but packed a change of clothes and underwear, my comb and brush, my ipod, a book, a couple of towels and blankets, an ice chest, some other odds and ends, and I hit the road.

I started off early to beat the traffic, and so I could claim my spot on the beach before it got too crowded. I loved driving, and I was good at it. It gave me time to think...kind of like when I would go for walks around my neighborhood. I hadn't seen much of Stan lately, from what I saw and heard he was enjoying being the star QB on the junior varsity team...and all the "perks" that came along with that position. I wouldn't call him a man-whore, but I knew that he wasn't monogamous either. I hadn't expected anything different really. He was young, good looking, an athlete--he was enjoying his life, and I didn't blame him.

There had been some gossip going around about him and Matt having a falling out at Paris' big birthday party. Matt, Stan, and June--Matt's cheerleader girlfriend had all went together. I hate crowds and was debating whether to go. But since Paris was my friend--I finally decided to go, unfortunately I missed all of the action. Matt's girlfriend June had got really drunk and had ended up all over Stan. Matt blamed Stan, but from what I heard, Stan had tried to get June off of him, and told her he wasn't interested. He told Matt she was ugly and had a wonky eye and Matt got mad and he and Stan came to blows. They were all pretty wasted that night though, so a few days later they were all friends again.

I arrived in Port Aransas about an hour later and found a pretty secluded spot on the beach. It was a nice day to be at the beach--kind of windy so the waves were really beating up the shoreline, but the wind kept it from being too hot also. I peeled off my shorts and tank top, I couldn't wait to get in the water, but I knew that once I did my hair would be done, so I decided to do that later. I was getting my stuff out of the car when a jeep full of kids went by and some guys let out wolf-whistles and catcalls. I was embarrassed, I think they were ridiculing me because I was bending over. I'm surprised they didn't say something about a beached whale. I sighed but tried to not let it ruin my day. I finished unpacking my stuff, spread a blanket on the ground and started reading my book and listening to my ipod. I must have accidentally dozed off because when I opened my eyes I could tell that it was getting later because the sun wasn't quite as intense as it had been earlier.

I decided I'd better get in the water before it got too late. I walked down to the shore and let the incoming tide tease my ankles. The water was nice and warm as I waded in deeper. A big wave was coming at me and it flew over my head drenching me. "There goes my hair," I thought, as it escaped the ponytail I had put it in. Before I knew it another wave came at me and knocked my glasses off.

Oh man, I forgot to take off my glasses before getting in the water--they are such a big part of me, I just forgot. I tried to look for them, hoping they would float, but I didn't see them. I went underwater to look for them, but the saltiness of the Gulf stung my eyes and I couldn't see anything. I came back up to the surface and felt around with my feet--nothing. I got out of the water hoping that the tide may have washed them ashore...nothing.

"Oh man," I wondered, "how am I going to drive home without my glasses?" I looked at the sky: judging from the sunlight we had about an hour to go before it got dark. Maybe I could make it home if I started out right now. I couldn't see well, everything was a blur, but I could see enough to drive until it got dark.

I was still standing there debating if I should start driving home when a somewhat familiar voice said, "Did you lose something?"
