They come to a stop in a clearing about two miles in, Ace snapping his head in the direction of every rustle and twig snap.
"Guys, I think something's following us" Ace says excitedly
"Yea Ace, a frigin squirrel" Len says grumpily sitting on a rotting stump
Ace turns to them a scowl on his face "what's eating you?"
"Flip flops are stupid" Len mumbles as he hauls his foot up to assess the damage.
"I could have told you that" Ace says, watching his friend "what are those?" he says noticing the small burrs embedded in his foot.
"Duno" he responds going to remove one "argh! Son of a bitch!" he yells shaking his hand off to alleviate the apparent pain.
"How odd" Hanna says stepping closer "I've never seen burrs like these."
Ace picks up the camera, training it on his friends
"Cool, a plant that even the Botanist's daughter doesn't know" he says a slight smirk on his face "so how do we get rid of em', Hanna?"
Len glares at the camera "glad you're enjoying this, asshat"
"Well..." Hanna says snapping up the pair's attention "pulling them manually is out, and leaving them could be bad" she says dropping her backpack and digging through it" let's just go with this" she says pulling out a plastic comb.
"How's a comb gonna help?" Ace questions from behind the camera
"Simple" Hanna explains "try brushing them out instead of pulling them off" she hands the comb to Len
Len sighs taking the comb, he positions it above a group of burs right above his ankle, he sucks in a breath, and gritting his teeth.
"Quick, like a band aid!" he breaths quickly swiping down" Argh!" he yells, discarding the comb with a singular bur caught in the plastic bristles "good lot of shit that did" he grumbled griping the now bleeding patch of skin.
Hanna picks up the comb pulling the bur off with tweezers and places it in a small acrylic cube; she holds it close staring at it with wonder. "My dad might be able to tell me what this is" she says stowing it in her black pack
Ace turns the camera on himself "so Hanna got a specimen of some weird bur and Len learned to never wear flip flops in the woods" he ends flashing a smile into the camera before turning it back to his friends.
Len glares back at Ace "Ass" he says
"Dumbass" Ace shoots back smiling
Len flips him the bird before his attention is drawn back to Hanna crouching beside him
"We should keep removing them" she says solemnly
"Well I aint doing it" Len says
Hanna sighs "fine I will" she says replacing the comb, this time with a firmer grip on the burs.
"Hey Len" Ace calls distracting him as Hanna swiftly removes the burs
A slur of profanities, Six Band-Aids and a gauze wrap later the trio is back to walking
Hanna Had the camera as they continued walking, she lagged behind the two boys, watching the scenery while she thought about the Bur, something just didn't sit right with her, it was such an odd find and so many at that, almost like someone was purposely growing the plant, but why out here in the middle of the woods? Hanna stopped dead in her tracks, she caught something in her peripheral vision, a big black dog's shadow, but when she checked there was nothing. She stood there dumbfounded until.
"Hanna" Len called back to her "what'cha staring at?"
Ace eyes her suspiciously.
Hanna shakes her head, her black hair swishing back and forth as she did "nothing, just going crazy" she laughs off the unsettling feeling gnawing at her.
"Want Ace to take the camera?" Len smirks
"Hey, hey" Ace says back.
She shakes her head again "na, I've always wanted to film idiots in their natural habitat" she teases trailing the camera on them.
The boys in turn flip her off; she giggles "guess that needs to be edited out"
