The candle flickered in the corner of the living room, leaving the lamp on the other side of the couch and her fluorescent phone screen as the only light sources left. It was currently 11pm and she was still waiting for James to come home.
Tonight was there 2 year anniversary but he never had been one to be to excited about those things. Ronnie however was used to it. She ordered herself some chinese and sat on the couch telling her mother all about her adventures through downtown london over the last week. James had really made the executive decision to move per usual as she never got much say. But thats how all relationships are.
Veronica laughed with delight "Yeah mom. I'm really enjoying my time here it's definitely-"
Suddenly James came bursting in the door behind her. She could smell the alcohol from across the room. Veronica quickly ended the call with her mother just before James spoke.
"Baby..." He stretched out each and every letter in his words not that it mattered as he was already slurring his speech so bad understanding him required talent. Lucky Veronica had learned to possess that talent during the repeated nights like this. The first time it happened she attempted to take care of him with sweet gestures such as giving him water and putting him to bed. She learned very quickly that night that that is not what james wanted though.
Veronica quickly glances up at the dent in the wall next to the door which quickly sent a memory flipping through her mind.
James threw the glass against the wall. Veronica could feel one of the millions of pieces of the glass embed itself in her skin.
"You think I need you to swaddle me like a child!" His roaring screams and sweat dripping down his red face caused tears to begin to roll down her cheeks. "You..." he begins walking closer and closer to veronica as she backs up against the wall. He was so close she could feel his breath. He lips quivered as she closed her eyes and looked up to the ceiling praying for this night to end. "Answer me!"
His strong voice rang through veronicas head as she quickly processed an answer shouting out "Yes. Or... No. I mea-"
"Yes is that what you really think?"
"No I meant-" She felt a gust of air by her left arm as James punched the wall with all this strength.
She continued backing up but she couldn't go any farther as James was following her. He screamed even louder his spit flying in her face as he spoke. "Listen to me. I don't need you to be my mother. You are not here to take care of me or to treat me like a child."
"Im-" She tried to speak but was quickly shut up when suddenly veronica felt her cheek start to sting.
He had hit her.
"I said listen! The only reason im with a girl as ugly and worthless as you are is because I feel bad. Now clean this mess up and leave me the hell alone."
James threw her to the ground onto the glass which punctured her skin in many places and left into there bedroom with a slam of the door behind him.
