I walked up to my group of friends, we were all greasers. Mostly hung out at drag races like the one we were at now. I was racing today, against some guy named Steve. I heard he was good, but I was better.
"Hey Y/N, good luck racing today! I know you'll be great!" My friend Kammie cheered. I blushed, trying to hide my embarrassment, I pretended to fix my,very messy, ponytail.
"Thanks Kam, I have a feeling this guys gonna be a little harder to beat." I glanced at a incredibly attractive guy leaning against his car. I guess that was him.
"He's cute!" Kammie whispered. I rolled my eyes. I couldn't let his looks distract me from my main goal. To walk away, yet again, the winner. I walked over to my car and turned the key. It rumbled loudly and everyone looked over, including Steve. I sat in the drivers seat until it was time to start. I pulled up to the starting line. I glanced over at Steve, who was staring straight ahead. I could feel the tension from my car.
"Alright here's the rules!" Vennie Astro, one of my friends yelled. I dazed off, not really listening to him. I couldn't stop thinking about Steve. Usually I was completely focused on the race.
"On your mark, get set......GOOO!!" Vennie yelled. I floored the gas pedal taking the lead. I smirked but quickly realized how fast Steve was catching up. He drove beside me, still staring straight ahead. I pressed the gas pedal as hard as I could and moved a few inches ahead. For the first time he looked into my window, the color left his face and he smiled shyly at me. It was my turn to focus now, I gripped the steering wheel and took off.
"One more lap" I said to myself. I managed to stay a few inches in front of Steve. I had to win, I hadn't lost a race since I was 15! I could see the finish line, still ahead I put all of my weight on the gas pedal, going as fast as I had ever gone, I crossed the finish line 9 inches in front of Steve!
I stopped, and looked into his window. He rubbed his temples and took a deep breath. His friend ran to his car and opened his door. From what I could see he was trying to calm Steve. I got out of my car and walked quickly over to my cheering group of friends. "Oh my gosh! You beat him! You beat him!" Kammie jumped up and down. I smirked and wiped my forehead.
"That was the hardest race I'd ever been in!" I admitted. I heard a shout coming from a few yards away.
"I don't care that she's a girl! She beat me! And I'm not happy about it!" I heard Steve tell his friend. I suddenly felt bad, this clearly meant a lot to him. Maybe he was trying to show off to someone. I became sad at the thought, but why? It's not like I was looking for a boyfriend. He looked over at me then sarcastically chuckled. "Hey! Come here!" He hollered, my heart started pounding as I walked closer to him. His expression suddenly changed and he began to blush.
"I-I just wanted to say con-congratulations. You were good out there." He smirked shyly. I stared at him in shock.
"Th-anks." I stuttered. "I'm Y/N." I held out my hand. He hesitated then quickly shook it.
"If you ever want to go get a soda, or maybe just drive our cars around. I'd be up for it." He offered. I smiled and nodded.
"Actually I was just craving a 7-up. Wanna go get one?" I asked, fiddling with my keys. His eyes sparkled.
"Sure! Hey Sodapop, you mind if I go with Y/N?" Steve looked at his friend. He shrugged.
"Sure man," he looked at me and smiled "I'm Sodapop, Steve's best friend." He greeted. I waved.
"Y/N" . Steve and I decided to take my car, Soda drove his home.
"So, how long have you been racing?" He asked.
"About 3 years. I'm 17 and a half." I said, hoping he was around that age.
"Really? I'm 17 too." He smiled. Then he got shy. "Do you have a boyfriend?" He blushed trying to avoid eye contact. I smiled and laughed a little.
"No actually. And what about you, a guy as good looking as yourself has to have some girl in his life." I flirted back. He shook his head and chuckled.
"Nope, single." He winked at me.
"Well, I could change that." I tucked a piece of hair behind my ear. He smiled at reached for my hand.
"As long as I get to keep racing you!" He joked.
"You can race me everyday if you'd like." I leaned in closer to him. Our lips brushed against eachother, I smiled then kissed him for the first time.
That was 11 months ago, almost a year. Me and Steve are still strong and happy. But he still hasn't beaten me! Maybe one day.💙💙
