Prologue
Alice could see it clearly. Her father scouring through the house. Looking for something. For them.
Rain pelted the passenger window she stared out of. Her hands were frozen; stupid volvo didn't have a heater. She shivered and glanced at her mother, who was staring straight ahead with a tight jaw. Her mother knew he was in town, so why had they not left? Why were they still in the state? It was so pointless to be here after all the running. Why stop?
Alice clenched her teeth and flicked her eyes back outside. A woman and a child were huddled on the corner of the street under an umbrella, waiting to cross. She wondered if they should be running away from someone too.
A sickening feeling twisted her stomach as the car turned onto the highway home. There was one lane in each direction. Traffic was fairly light, but Alice could see oncoming cars in the distance. She closed her eyes against the glare of headlights.
They could not go home. They couldn't.
Alice took a single look at the stiffness of her mother's shoulders, the way her hair teased the corner of her mouth. The way she pressed her lips together and clenched the steering wheel betrayed her fear. Alice took a deep breath. Would she let her mother face him? Would she let ten years of running go to waste?
No.
The cold leather of the steering wheel was stiff on her palms. Tires squeeled. Headlights blinded her, and left her in darkness. The last thing she was aware of was the smell of blood flooding her nostrils.
